a very frustrating thing about being a female firefighter in my experience is masking up/ wearing a helmet with longish hair. i have not found a way to wear it comfortably and out of the way. high bun in the helmet makes the helmet fit wierd, low bun below helmet limits movement of my head. any advice from the girls out there??!!!

I bought the fireproof pads used in wildland gear and put them in the knee pad pockets on my bunkers...works great and the best part is they are only $ 5.00 from the Fire Store....Age and bad life choices = bad knees for me.....LOL Paul
cant find the right way... my drives me crazy 2
i keep trying low ponytail but halfway through the call, my hair start falling out...
i found out if i put a medium pony tail and flipped it back through the pony tail holder i could squish my hari to my head under the helmet without making it feel too weird.... small pony tail holder also make a huge difference
Not to be a nay-sayer....and for the record, my hair is halfway down my back...with bangs....and thick...

Braids, pony tails, buzz cut, permed, short or long....all over color or highlights... doesn't matter.

As long as it's under your hood and isn't interfering with the fit on your helmet or mask; that's the priority.

If you have long hair, keep hair ties in your locker and in your bunker coat pockets. I keep a zip lock baggie of them on our First Due under the jumpseat.
Sorry, not a girl last I checked but suggest you wear a nomex hood. It holds it back and out of the way. Seems pretty universal but maybe you dont have them.
Braid is the easiest
Chief,

I thnk they are talking about how to put up their hair before they put their hoods on so as to keep it from getting caught down in their coats, or falling into their face as they put on their masks, or be pushed out of the hood as they pull it over their masks.

I must say she is right a french braid is the best way but if you can't french braid do a regular braid.....The ponytail although it is better than just leaving your hair down it doesnt always work....because if you don'y make sure that you tuck all of it in you have a problem....just my thoughts......~Jen
I do a series of braids. One on each side and bring together to a braid down the center, tuck it under and put a scrunchie on it. This has worked very well for me.
Having had both short and long hair, I kept a bandana in my turnout gear. Before I put on my hood I would put on the bandana. Keeps your hair out of your face, keeps it under control, prevents entanglement in your mask straps, and is fast and easy.
I use the low ponytail, but I also add some hair ties every couple inches down my hair to keep it all together. Then I keep it inside my hood, running down my back or over my shoulder. Sometimes dumping some water on the wispies and slicking them back helps.
