The ACT volunteer firefighter who was killed yesterday near Marysville, north-east of Melbourne, was David Balfour, 46, of Gilmore.

David Balfour is the first firefighter to be killed while on duty since the Victorian bushfires began.

He died after a tree fell on him while he was attempting to connect a hose to the back of a fire tanker.

A paramedic with the man's team was unable to save him.

RIP Dave, I never knew you, but you are one of us. You came to help us when help was needed.
