I started out in the biz over 18 years ago as a cadet at the local rescue squad. I have no problem with cadets so long as they are controlled. I have seen departments where the cadets know exactly where they can go and where they can't and others the cadets seem to run rampant. It all depends on the department and how they train / supervise their cadets.
Cody, just a thought about the insurance issue. You really should be covered just in case something happens. Why not have your company look into the Boy Scouts and the Exploring program. I am a Unit Commissioner for my local council assigned to Exploring posts. for the very little it costs ( $20 for the charter each year & $10 per youth & adult advisor each year) you get some great insurance & alot of support if you need it. You might want to check it out.
Thanks Frank if you would like email the Fire Chief his name is Dale Dillon. firechief@crowleycounty.net and just give him some information about the Explore Post. I am really interested in being an Explore actually
well this subject is wore out. I think Jr's are fine. Everyone has to start somewhere. If its a good program with good leadership and direction they can be a definite asset to the Dept. If not its a babysitting club.
Jr Fire Fighters, Explorers and Cadets are important, It's the continuation of the Fire and Emergency services. We have Cadets here, and they work hard for their community. So yes I appriciate the help and enjoy working with them.
And ya know, What a great way to really find out if its the job for you, so many people don't find that out until investing several years in training and then get on the job a find out this isn't for them.
I think its a great idea for developing Firefighters/medics for the future.....BUT rember the rules of 3 ups....I like this rule for probies as well....#1......Show up #2.....Keep up #3.....Shut up..... ask questions afterward when it is appropriate. Stay safe...always Keep the Faith.....Train like its real......Paul
I am a FF/emt and I work with the juniors in my department (we have no hierarchy for the program at this time) but I think they are awesome. and to be corny, they are the future of the dept.
