So i want to start a junior/explorer program in my dept but I'm not real sure even where to begin. As far as I know, my dept. has never had any such program, however; with participation issues among current members, I feel it would be a good way to determine if an indiviual is truly dedicated to the dept. before making them a full time member.

I have hundreds of questions and hopefully you folks can help me out. I mean things like, what is the standard minimum age for an explorer, what are the issues with their school, what are the benefits and disadvantages of them carrying a pager, can they be placed on my dept's current insurance and if so, what is the extent of duties they are allowed to perform on calls, what is the possible extent of their training as far as hands on goes???

Now obviously im not crazy enough to let a junior grab a line off the engine and fight a structure fire but by extent of their duties i mean, can they even ride the rig out to scene or do they have to ride in a command vehichle? Can they hit the hydrant or do they have to stay completly off to the side???

Anyway, you get the idea, I need any advice I can get before taking this one to the chief, Thanks guys

First off, check with your school system and state labor department as to the age limitations of your juniors/explorers and if they need what we call here, work permits. We start our Jrs. off at 16 y/o. They can participate in basic firefighting training except for live burns. They can learn CPR and 1st Aid. In PA, at 16, they can learn to be and get certified as an EMT. We state that our Jrs. have a C average throughout high school as part of their membership requirements. They train just like us,otherwise. They don't ride first due apparatus, generally. As long as it does not interfere with school hours, they get to support us on the fire ground, within reason and according to their training level. I can send you a copy of our Jr. FF SOGs, if you'd like them. Feel free to e-mail me at ffanjemt2@msn.com.
Good luck !
Andy
