So... I started a forum a while back about your departments biggest tanker. I've gotten some really great responses and heard of some that are really, really big!!! So now I ask, How many people on your dept. can actually drive those monsters and if you are one of the members that does; what do you think of driving it??? Personally, I know it took alot of practice to learn how to jam the gears on our 4500 tri-axle"whale" with a split differential.
Our 4000 gallon tankers are equiped with 400 hp engines, automatic transmisions, and automatic exhaust retareders. Everyone in our Dept. drives them without any problems.
Yeah, I think alot more of our dept. members would be able to drive our tanker if it was an automatic. The split differential is what gives people alot of problems. We have a smaller 2500 gallon tanker that everybody can drive, its an automatic
I would have thought it would be pretty easy to "jam the gears" in a truck? Sorry mate, I'm just having fun :)
Split diffs are different, but practice makes perfect. We don't have any split diff vehicles, but we do have people who can't double the clutch on our off-road vehicles. Even though we're told that doubling the clutch isn't necessary, it will make a far smoother change in hard conditions!
Okay, so I didn't mean exactly "jam the gears" LOL, although sometimes that is what happens. Thats just a phrase people in my area use sometimes. Anyway, I have heard it's easier to drive the split without using the clutch. I just cant seem to get myself use to doing that. Oh well... practice does make perfect, thats very true.
