Today we responded to a fire on Line Creek with Lily. I was getting ready to leave in the tanker to go find a hydrant to refil, and realized that we had deployed the hose we would need and I had to go get a hose to take to the hydrant with us. Always trying to help somehow, I started getting out of the passenger side of the truck (where I had been sitting) to get the hose. Believe me, I was holding on with 3 points of contact as I was getting out of the truck, and I fell anyway...(Yes I use 3 point contact to enter/exit a truck...several years ago I fell from an 18 wheeler and was in a cast from shoulder to fingers for 8 weeks...I use safety measures gettin in and out!)Tonight I am sitting in a recliner with my feet propped up..Don't sound bad, huh? Well, my ankle turned completely in a 90 degree angle from my leg sideways when I fell and it is now wrapped in an ace bandage with me wondering if I should have it x-rayed. Barely can walk (with a pronounced limp) and couldn't go in to work this evening driving the school bus...had to have a sub.

We have training tonight at the station...Thank goodness it is just classroom training on NIMS and not active "movement" training..There's no way I could navigate the smoke maze tonight! Hopefully I'll make it out there (if I can drive) and get to participate...

The moral of the story? Safety practices are good, but not fool-proof!!!!@!!!!! Be very careful in everything you do!!!

As an update: the chief sent me to the E.R. later that night. Ends up, I had a severe sprain which put me on light duty for 7 days. At my other job, there is no "light duty"--you either drive or you don't and when dealing with 70+ kids on a school bus, you have to be able to move quick in case of emergency. Therefore, a week off work, which led up to Thanksgiving, so, 2 weeks in all. Two sets of X-Rays later, they decided it wasn't broken, and finally after annointing and prayer at church 2 weeks later, it has quit hurting!!! I'm not 100% yet, but I'm about 95%, so I'll settle for that!h

Be careful out there guys...
