Well I went into Home Depot yesterday with my son and one of the entry door's was locked so I went around to the other entry and it was opened. I walked up to the locked one and I could not open it at all. This is the entry going out by the cash registers a main funnel for costomers. I went up to the first employee I saw and asked them why that door was locked. They relpied "it lets in a bunch of cold air". This home depot is in my fire district. I asked to speak with a manager and she replied why. I took her over to the door and told her see this sticker "this door must be unlocked during bussiness hours". She replies "well we get cold up here". I told her that door being locked is a violation of your fire code. Well now she goes and get her manager. I tell him the same thing and he replies OK. Like he knew what he was doing was wrong. We've had the same problem with Wal-Mart too. I just don't understand why they feel they need to keep doors locked, even when it tells you on the door that it needs to stay unlocked.

They don't care. They will keep doing it. We have even gone to where our inspector will make surprise visits on the weekends on his own time if this continues. For complete problem places, the state can always be notified. Most of these big box stores don't care what you tell them. Even if you fine them a couple of hundred dollars, that is the cost of doing business.
Sounds like a code enforcement issue, or at the very least an issue for your Fire Inspector/Fire Marshal to address. If they continue to be in violation, you can fine them, or even take it to court. If all else fails, take it to the court of public opinion. The general public would not appreciate knowing that these establishments only care about taking their money, not about keeping them safe while they spend their money there! Just don't give up!
