Our district is only a 1/2 miles square. I tell people we have the smallest district in the second smallest state. I'm wondering if it's really the smallest district in America?
For those that are wondering. it's small because back in 1949 when we started we were a black nieghborhood. The white companies would respond but take thier time doing so. Remember, 1949 was a different time. 8 men started a fire company and only wanted to protect thier own. Hence the 1/2 mile square district.
I know of a small oil refinery in CA that has it own FD about your size. I believe you meant 1/2 square mile, right?. God bless you and your predecessors for your community service. TCSS
Oh they have. We run about 350-400 runs a year and 80% are mutual aid. We have a great relationship with all the companies now. took awhile, back in the early 70's there was a working fire about 1 mile from the firehouse. A passery came to the station to alert us about the fire (it was in another district) We they responded and were told to return, even though they could see smoke and fire up the road. the company isn't that old and I knew alot of the orginals and my aunt is a walking historian. I', writing a true history of the fire company, the good and the bad. But yes times have gotten better.
With your command of the english language and the passion to tell a story that needs to be told and shared, I am sure you will be very successful when your book gets turned into a movie. Think big... You can either run with the big dogs or stay on the porch. I've got a feeling that your a big dog...
Keep writing, post a blog with more stories from your aunt. Your experience and obvious successes are an inspiration to our firefighting community and for readers all over the globe. This is what America is all about. Some folks talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Keep on walking brother and god bless!
Your biggest fan from Santa Barbara, Mike : )
PS: Thought I'd share that next week, I am going to the sierra nevada mountains (Eastern Side) with the local college geology folks. Been doing the trip for over 35 years now. I wanted to share a picture that kind of shows 1/2 mile in area but in god's country... wide open spaces with valleys and mountains as a backdrop. The white International bobtail rig is what I drive as well as provide paramedic services and logistical support. We take care of 200+ students and faculty which includes providing hot breakfasts and dinners. I know you will enjoy the photo because I am sure it is much different than where you work. : )
