All FireFighters Support this great idea to make a National Firefighter Day on 9/11.

All Firefighters please support Jon Leahys idea of making 9/11 a National Firefighter Day out of respect to all Firefighters in this great country of ours I would think all the Brothers&Sisters that gave their lives For the Supreme Sacrifise on 9/11 would be smiling down from Heaven knowing that all Firefighters are being recognized on 9/11 as the National Firefighter Day in The United States. I hope all politicians see this and all the firefighters support this for Jon Leahy who lost his father in NY on 9/11 what a wonderfull idea.Firefighter Hugh Fawcett-Station57 -Irwin PA-Westmoreland County

You got my vote and support.
Under Franklin's goading, a group of thirty men came together to form the Union Fire Company on December 7, 1736. Their equipment included "leather buckets, with strong bags and baskets (for packing and transporting goods), which were to be brought to every fire. The blaze battlers met monthly to talk about fire prevention and fire-fighting methods. Homeowner's were mandated to have leather fire-fighting buckets in their houses -from ushistory.org

Unfortunately, December 7th is "Pearl Harbor Day". Sorry folks, I tried.
I concur with this point of view.

The events of 9/11 vastly overshadow the unique experience that we, the fire service brotherhood, share. Though it is a sacred thing to us because of the sense of connectedness we have, we have to recognize that what transpired is larger than just, well, us. Many more Americans (and others) lost their lives, in addition to the firefighters from FDNY. Additionally, a powerful psychological blow was struck to all Americans, and liberty-loving people like us, with global consequences. We were all connected to this tragedy.

As much as it may pain some of us to hear this, we don't own September 11, 2001. It isn't solely ours to claim... we share it, though perhaps more personally than some others, with a far greater community of people than just the fire service.

Let some other day honor the service of America's firefighters.
You get an "A" for effort!
i think that would be a wonderful idea and even if it is designated ''PATRIOT DAY" Maybe they could put it on a day after 9/11 that would have some significance pertaining to the incident. how exactly would we go about doing this? like sigh a petition or something?
From what I've read, there's been an unofficial Fire Fighters day celebrated for many years on the 4th May, St Florians Day. The Patron Saint of Fire Fighters (what, not St Patrick!) apparently he was the force behind the starting of the first fire service in the world - in ancient Rome many many years ago.

The person who wrote the following:
"The role of a firefighter in today's society - be it urban, rural, natural environment, volunteer, career, industrial, defence force, aviation, motor sport, or other is one of dedication, commitment and sacrifice - no matter what country we reside and work in. In the fire service we fight together against one common enemy - fire - no matter what country we come from, what uniform we wear or what language we speak."
Lt JJ Edmondson, 1999

seems to have been a driving force behind getting that date recognised as the International Fire Fighters Day. Why not use that day?
Thank you firecat .
OK I'm with Tony P. National (or international) Firefighters Day should be May 4th, St. Florian's Day. All in favor?
Perfect... after the socialist May Day, and just before Cinco de Mayo! Plenty of room! ;)
Hi Brother, You are right I never gave it a thought and I can't speak for Jon but I would love to see a National Firefighters, Paramedics, 911 Dispatchers and Policeman Day. No disrespect but I think we make the Supreme Sacrifise also . Afterall we are the three most important parts of government next to the military so I think that these men and women should be recognized for everything they do so unselfishly for our fellow neighbors and taxpayers. I still say all Firefighters should be paid just like the 911 dispatchers and the Police and the Paramedics in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Lets keep our men and women employed in our own Commonwealth and put Politics off to the side for once.Hughie 57 House Westmoreland County
Brothers&Sisters, If we all contacted our State Representatives for our States we could have them write the legislation and have the Senate pass it through to Congress in Washington D. C. so it is a National Holiday. Just a suggestion. I am sure all the politicians would love to hear our ideas because thats a feather in their caps and it only makes them look great if they would make a National Holiday for the FireFighters,Paramedics,911 Dispatchers and Policemen.Hughie 57 House
I like the idea too. All the Feds need to do though is make it Patriots / Firefighters Day.
