Recently got to go on a mva with the fire department. What a rush! I was apparently quite nervous when the call came out. I did not make the first out squad but did get to go with the Tanker. The firefighter who I went out to the scene with was nothing short of amazing.

I say that because he knew I was nervous. I was already on station when he walked into the station. I was back at the lockers donning my turnout gear when Dave came in and said Let's Roll! I grabbed everything i could get my hands on. (helmet, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 nomex hoods and my radio) I like to be prepared I guess.

The signs a rookie is in the building are:
1. I went to get up in the tanker and my coat got caught on something. End result was my bag for my mask which was attached to my coat got caught on the seat. ( Now everyone laugh at the rookie )

2. Firefighter Dave asked to get the garage door open so we could leave. I thought all 5 doors were on garage door openers and found out I was DEAD wrong. So then i decide to use the pull rope and still no success. I then turn around to Firefighter Dave who had a devious grin on his face. Dave got out of the tanker and proceeded to UNLOCK the slide latch and guess what, The door came open. hmmm! Did not see that one!

Now everyone have a really good laugh. Had a ball but glad the first run was out of the way.

Think it through, have a system, I turn up and do A,B,C, etc, Practise a few times, and don't rush, rushing equals screw up's....make the turning out a mental routine.... we make the rookies practise turning out until it's natural... enjoy the ride!!!

Just like Justin Buck said, We all make mistakes, we just hope it doesn't hurt anyone. That is a good laugh. lol. Get a few more under your belt and it will get easier. You start to make a routine.

Even veterans get nervous, amped up and the adrenaline flowing at times. I've found the best thing to do, as Justin/F-225 said, is just take a couple deep breathes.

If ur gonna be on the AFD and wanna make first truck out ur gonna have to be a little quicker. LOL! Never hurts to be prepared but i think theres a point where you got too much. HaHa. Just take a deep breath and slow down, but i guess if you did that we wouldn't have anything to laugh at. :-)
