DON’T LOOK NOW, BUT SOMEONE BROKE THE COOKIE CUTTER on BACKSTEP FIREFIGHTER.COM

Not sure it ever worked in the first place

DMVFirePhoto

We are in a fascinating period of time for the fire service.  Never before have the resources (financial, physical and mental) been greater.  We are finally looking at fires, how they burn, how conditions change.  We are looking a fuel packages, flow paths.  We are discussing heat release rates and polar…

The Training Epidemic

Most of you probably read the title of this post and are thinking to yourselves. "What is this lunatic talking about?  We train all the time!" and some of the volunteer firefighters are thinking that the training requirements of your fire department are already harsh enough and are extremely difficult to manage with your family and work.

I agree with you.  The current "training epidemic" that is sweeping the fire service nationwide is not a lack of training, but a lack of relevant,…

Training.... Or a Lack Thereof

Every department trains.  Some departments train weekly, monthly, daily, etc.  My question for you is:

HOW do you train?

I already talked about practicing like you play and training hard, so lets talk about training CORRECTLY.

I, sadly, know of more than a few fire departments that are stuck in

their old ways.  They train using the same methods that the old salts

learned when they were in the academy.  This is not completely a bad

thing, as using… Continue

Is Anyone (Else) Out There? First Arriving & Trapped

As reported in our nations news, five DC Fire Department members were injured yesterday in an early morning house fire.  They became trapped by a ceiling collapse shortly after making entry. The speed with which the RIC deployed and made rescues, coupled with the the IC immediately requesting a 2nd Alarm resulted in not only rapid rescue of multiple trapped firefighters, but also quick knock down of a serious fire.

Unlike urban/metro FD's, the suburban FD may not have quite…

Firefighter Rehab and NFPA Compliance

NFPA 1584 requires rehab at the scene of all emergancy incidents;as well as training exercises. Highlights of 1584 include nine different specific areas. Some aerea's of importance include Relief from the climatic zones, Calorie and electrolyte replacement, and medical monitoring just to name a few. We are all aware that many of the larger cities across the nation have specific rehab units. These units respond to assignments beyond the first alarm. There are also units such as the salvation…

Today’s incident demands on the fireground are unlike those of the recent past, requiring incident commanders and commanding officers to have increased technical knowledge of building construction with a heightened sensitivity to fire behavior, a focus on…

Safety Week 2010: Make It Personal!

Despite the fact that I wrote this piece for Fire-Rescue Magazine last year, I'm pretty sure its content is still relevant as we ponder recent and not so recent events on the eve of Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week http://www.firefighternation.com/forum/topics/usfa-reminds-you-that-safety.

As I stated in comments to another blog by John Mitchell (…

The Bathtub Collapse, Part 1

This article is co-authored by my friend and colleague Jason Walters. Jason is the Team Leader for USAR SC-Regional Response Team 4. We're discussing this topic at All Hazards Contemplations.

Introduction

FEMA’s USAR system, basic firefighting texts, and other fire-rescue references describe how to recognize and respond to a variety…

Rookie's and Veteran's

As a fire service instructor over the years I have met a lot of fellow firefighters and not until recently did I realize the stories from these firefighters were always the same from rookies and veterans. The rookies always say “we don’t fit in” and the veterans always say “ the rookies just don’t get it”. I guess the reason it didn’t hit me sooner was as a fire service instructor and as a company officer it is my…

“MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY!”- Are You Ready?

Did you get enough training so far this week? Because you are a proud and

professional firefighter, I already know your answer. So allow me to offer some more.

Here’s a little something to think about: Is everyone on the same page regarding MAYDAY's on the fireground?

Many…

Candlemoth Syndrome

How many firefighters have experienced Candlemoth Syndrome? I know I have, particularly when I was younger and less experienced. Candlemoth Syndrome is a firefighting cousin of Target Fixation, where firefighters are drawn closely to the fire in disregard for proper firefighting tactics and for firefighter safety.

The definition of "… Continue

Why Cant we as Firefighters GET IT!!!!!!

As a State Advocate for the Everyone Goes Home program I was asked by a department and a good friend to come speak during the 2009 Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week. I was very impressed with how this department has made the steps to improve and adopt the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives. Before the presentation started my friend and fellow instructor gave me a tour of his department and we got to talking. He said that a few of his neighboring departments probably wouldn’t show up… Continue

Don't save Safety for the Critique

Over at All Hazards Contemplations, we're observing a continuence of the 2009 Safety, Health, and Survival week, even though it technically ended yesterday. I'm sitting here sadly shaking my head. June has been a bad month for the U.S. Fire and EMS services. This month there have already been 10 reported… Continue

Swine Flu Preparedness for Schools

Swine Flu Preparedness for Schools

The recent declaration of a public health emergency over the swine flu cases in the U.S. and Mexico highlights the importance of public health and [pandemic planning. An influenza-based public health emergency and/or pandemic has always been a question of "when" not "if" and while it was assumed a new strain of /avian flu would be the culprit, experts emphasized a pandemic can be caused by any new virus.…

How To CHANGE what TRADITION Has Built

As I sit here trying to build a plan for the future I think of what has happened over the last 41 years in the fire service. It was 1968 November my Father joined the fire dept in our small mid west town of around 1,200 people, I was 11 months old. He was told show up bring a CASE and be there at 7. So he did and I am sure he never thought that 41 years later so many things would have changed and how far the fire service has come. That night in Nov. he was handed his gear, which was a plastic… Continue
