I can't believe that Marie didn't know what "ducky" meant. Must be a Massachusetts thing, or and "old" thing. Take care. Liked "God's Country".........how true!
  • Da Chief - Jim O'Neill

What, my dear, do you mean by "an old thing"???? You shouldn't say old to an old person. It could cause irrepairable damage.

  • kevin daniels

can your dept. help me some?
i only need $2,000 more to get treatment that could allow me to walk again.all donations are tax deductible.heres a letter my mom wrote explaining my need.
My name is Pat Daniels. I am writing to you in regard to my son Kevin. Kevin was a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the South Boston Fire Department when on the night of August 7, 1998 while responding to a fire call, he had an accident on the way to the call. He was only 19 years old. He sustained a traumatic brain injury that almost claimed his life and has left him a quadriplegic with limited mobility. He is not paralyzed. He’s still an associate member with the department. He was also a firefighter and EMT at the South Boston Speedway the summer he had the accident. Kevin’s father is the maintenance manager at the speedway.

The doctors advised us to terminate life, but for us that wasn’t an option. Kevin is a survivor. He was born at 28 weeks weighing 2 lbs. 5 oz., 15 inches long.

We have researched stem cell therapy for 4-5 years. After sending Kevin’s medical records to a doctor in California, we were told he was a candidate for the umbilical cord blood stem cell therapy, but would have to go to Tijuana, Mexico to have the procedure done. The fire department immediately started raising funds for us to go. They raised enough for us to go for one trip. The cost is $6,000.00 per vial x 4 vials. Travel expenses are approximately $5,000.00.

On September 25, 2006 we went to Mexico and had the umbilical cord blood stem cell transplant. Since the procedure has been done, we have seen 33 improvements, some being significant. His speech is better. His medicine for spasticity in his extremities has been reduced to where he is only getting 20% of what he was getting. That is a 80% reduction. He now has slight movement in all 5 fingers on his left hand, which he didn’t have before. We knew if the first trip was successful we would need to return every six months until no more improvements are seen. It is wonderful that after 8 years we can still see improvements because of this treatment.

We are now trying to raise the funds to go back. The South Boston Fire Dept. is accepting donations. I’m reaching out to others outside of this area for help. I’ve never reached out to others for help since Kevin’s accident, but the importance of Kevin continuing to receive the stem cell therapy means too much to him for me not to reach out and ask.

I want to push the government and the medical field to research this avenue of treatment for others. I don’t want this just to help my son, but for it to help others as well. This means that Kevin needs to continue this process to prove the success of this procedure.

If you would like to send a donation or know of others that would like to help, please send the donation to:

    Kevin Daniels Stem Cell Fund

    South Boston Fire Dept.

    403 Broad Street

    South Boston, VA 24592

You can contact Chief Steve Phillips with any questions at 434-575-4292. The fire dept.is receiving and administering the funds and all donations are tax deductible.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Please help us to make this a reality. Thank you so much from my family.

May God bless you and keep you is my prayer.

I have forwarded your message to all of my groups, other firefighters, EMT's and Paramedics. I figure it should reach somewhere in the range of 2,000 to 3,000 people, if not more once it is forwarded again, which I requested. Maybe if we can get others to do that, hint, hint, people, we can generate some funding. Good luck and I will keep Kevin & pat in my prayers.

    Da Chief

Hey Chief, how are things going up your way. Well down here, its hot and gtting hotter. Lack of rain and high winds, cause`s for a long day. I have a question for you, Is there any way that you might by chance know how we can get or come across any LDH 4" or 5" hose with out going through a grant prosess? I`ve contacted many Departments around our area and no one has any or has no idea how to get any with out buying it themselves or through a grant. Our budget is to low for us to buy ny right no, so I`m trying different ways tohelp save money on cost. If you have any ideas please feel free to contact me @ 337-238-1692 or just drop me a line on here. Thank you for your time and efferts on helping us out. Capt.Duhon

Hi Jim, Thought I'd see if you were interested in sharing information and photos. I'm not familiar at all with Boston FD but would love to have the chance to get to know more from you.

My specialties include hazmat response, mass decon, fire prevention, wildland / urban interface firefighting, etc. I'm getting closer to retirement and am enjoying getting to know folks around the world, with the goal of someday doing some traveling to visit friends.

From your FFN site, it sounds like Irish music, which tells me that you might be Irish? I'm thinking Boston FD and all... My mothers side of the family came from County Cork and someday, I'm looking forward to visiting Ireland and seeing my roots. Eastern Fire Departments have such a warm tradition when it comes to ancestory and the fire service. All very cool.

If you have access to Google Earth, here's where I am located below. Take care and stay safe brother. Mike

I was reading your post on the Chief Officer's group and saw two things: Is Suwannee County the county by Crystal River? I dove in the Suwannee River but I'm sure that traverses quite a bit of land down there. I just like the area and have done many dives down that way (no caverns though).

I also saw you were the next parish over from us post-Katrina. I took SC-TF1 into St. Tammany then over to St. Bernard that first week. I know what you mean about wholesale destruction.

Anyway, good to meet ya and see you on FFN.
