About Me:
I have a 6 year old daughter named Isabella, and have been married now for almost 7 years. I love the fire service and all who respect it the way I do, and will be striving to bring back the standards of training and respect for senior members that it use to have, but somehow got misplaced...
But hey...If your daddy is chief and your last name has history in the dept you are safe for now. Bring back respect, and brotherhood...please.

I Believe...
That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the most of everything.
Day Job:
Fire Safety Rep. for the State of New York
Relationship Status:
Married
Why I Joined Fire/EMS
I joined the fire service to help those in need during times of disaster, even if its simply retrieving their family pictures from the wall of their burning home. Im here for whoever needs me. I dont need bars on my shirt or a different color helmet to make me have honor and pride in what I do.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
I live to make others happy, and help all who need it, and I love the training, brotherhood, and the feeling that I belong.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
I will probably be stoned to death for saying this but I feel passionately about it and maybe it will generate some support for this issue; I feel that Firefighter I & II should be State License's and need to be re-certified every 3-5 years like the NYS EMT license's. Not enough people refresh their training and its scary...VERY scary, to see guys who took "Essentials" 20+ years ago but have not attended any further or refresher training and feel they do not need to. THATS one of the top issues I feel in todays fire service.
Lack of training standards, volunteers with not enough time to train properly that get doctored through the system and end up being Chief at the age of 25. Lost Traditions, lack of respect of the elders and officers, Manpower issues, and equipment issues.

Well we have had snow alread, in Oct. we had a little well I was up north Moose Hunting with friends and family. Not to worry was not looking for you in the bush.
Nov. we had a couple of days with a couple of inches of snow. But warmed up and turned into rain, it's been nice but your right it's getting cooler and it's that season again for fireplaces. I'm the ground control, I climb for a living as a lines-man but do not leaving my ladder. So I'm better holding it at the bottom than being the one on the roof. We all have our fears and weakness, and work around them. One thing is that you use your crew to there best. And if you know what each person has as fears or weakness you can work with that. I would leave my ladder, just don't like to. We have already a couple of chimmeny fires. Had a couple of bad calls in the past week, one a propane station fire. 100 and 25lbs propane tanks exploding is not a fun scene. As well we had a worker at the pits get his arm stuck in a gravel press.
Other than that it's been good and slow... Means everyone is safe....

Hi Brian, glad to have you as a friend, always be safe

It's always nice to hear that someone is doing good after a call. That is one thing that I have found different from each job that I have done in the past. Was a nurse for some time, than did EMT for a part time gig for a little while and know I have been with the fire dept for over 10 years, each job I have found different. Nursing you always knew how they made out, sometimes you did not get the full story or even know what happened. EMT you got a little more as you where on scene and your always at the hospital so you could ask. Firefighter you only hear unless someone knows them or you hear back from the EMT or Police. Last fall we had a bad one, just down the road from me. A mini-van with 10 people in it, 8 that where here visist all Korean that blew a stop sign and crossed the path of an trasnsport which was on a hwy.
First truck on scene, and it was not nice at the end 5 died, choppers could not land as they have a new rule now that they can not land after sun set unless it's a chopper pad. So some where transported, but the freaky thing was as my Mom moved in with us not to long ago.
She went for her daily walk, seen it happened. As one of the firefighters grab me and said that Mom was in the cruiser, I was a little stund. Went over to the cruiser and asked what was going on. I was informed she was a witness as well first on scene. Only lucky thing after talking to her, the mini-van was heading south and my Mother was North. With the impact of the tractor trailer being on the south side, of the transport she did not see to much until the dust settled. We all do our best, and only hope for the best. It was a little disturbing knowning 10 people in a mini-van design for max 7 people.
You have taken the Fire / Arson Investigator Course, I hear that course is pretty good down in the States....

Long Island never changes. I am from Sag Harbor, but moved to Coram. I'm waiting on my papers to get into Coram's fire department. I will be going from 300 calls a year to over 3000. I can't wait. Where are you living up state?
  • Erin

I will ask about him. Maybe he is still a member? I had my first fatal a few months ago. He was burnt to a crisp. I had trouble getting him out of my head and at times still think about it. I know living in Coram, i'm going to see dead people. Losts of MVAs. i can handle dead people, but burnt ones, we'll see.
  • Huggie

ahh i ve been to cobleskill before, spent a week there. all i remember were train tracks and a bar haha. we stay busy down here, my department i 100% volunteer and we run about 400 calls a year, no medical calls which i a plus

hey... sorry i didnt get back to you sooner.. hope you had a good thanksgiving!!! and im sure ill talk to you soon... later
  • Art "ChiefReason" Goodrich

    Thanks, Moose.
    I appreciate that.
Sadly, I don't think that we are reaching the kid and if you've noticed, there are a few others like him chiming in.
Simply because we have experience in these matters and are trying to save this punk some grief, we are "not it alls, puffing our chests out". It really ticks me off, because it is a pervasive attitude in the fire service. Anyway, some evening, we'll get on the chat.
    Thanks, again.
    Art

  • Jim Seargent

Hey Brian, I was reading your "STUPID" posts, (pardon the pun), and took a look at your profile. I to an a native of Long Island and spent time in Soscary County. Even graduated Fundamentals from the Bethpage Fire Academy way back when! I hope all is well with the Sloughters up there. Is John Barlow still running the gun shop in Richmondville? If he is, do you know if Cesar, (the dog), is still alive? One thing I do have to say for that area is that I miss the Stewarts coffee. Hope to hear from you soon, and keep your head down.
  • MIKE TOIKA

Hi Brian, thanks for the correction on my reply to "Stupid" fast fingers, slow brain. Be safe, have great weekend, and like to be friends on the network....take care
  • Jim Seargent

    Hey Brother,
I had 5 acres in Sloansville where I built my house. Life there was OK, but my X-wife really turned on me. I was working on the road and decided to get out before she beat me up too bad. Long story, but the jist is that it's beautiful up there, (in the summer), but there's nothing to do that makes any real money. I was traveling around the country making a good living, but the living itself wasn't good. I took a trip through there about 5 years ago and it all looked pretty much the same.
  • Jim Seargent

Is Bruno Hoffman still a prick? I did a load of work on his house in Cooperstown and on the American Rehers, (spelling), building. He was one demanding ass! Do you think that comes from the money?
  • crystal eads

Hey sweety...good to hear from you. Thanksgiving was great and turned out very well. Other than that just keeping busy and trying to get through school. ( Only 2 more days left!!! )....anyways, hope you and Isabella are doing good and all is well with you. Dont be a stranger and take care .

  • Ben Waller

    Brian,

    I'd enjoy that as well.

Sorry for the late reply - a long day, culminating in a 3-hour Planning Commission meeting while they debated on a street name for a street that was built and operated with no name...for 3 months.

You have to love a street that can't be entered into the 911 system because there's no way to address it. I guess our addressing technician will be busy tomorrow.

    Be safe,
    Ben
