Hey, Mick....thought you might like to know...I think I'm going to be legit by the end of the week. I had written and physical agility tests plus an interview at a department...fire board meets this thursday, and then they are supposed to call me. I think this is it!
Hey! Got the call this morning....I'm in! It's official. Now my mom and dad aren't liars-they've got stickers on the back windows of their cars that say, "firefighter's mom" and "firefighter's dad'. This is a little surreal, I'm kind of floating around today...
that's ok Mick, I'll take the congratulations, grammatical beatings, ifs, ands or buts aside....
I broke the self-imposed blog writers strike (we were striking for better posting conditions and an abatement of stupidity and idiocy--well THAT never happened) --I got a little over-excited about signing up for the FD, and then I had a little moment of auto-literary fugue state, and next thing I knew....
Hi Mick,
I'm glad you had that TNT experience. It's been life changing for me. If you'd told me twenty years ago that I'd be running endurance events, never mind the cause, I would have laughed at you. Now my running coach and my mentor are two of my "chick posse" and getting out at 7:00 am on a cold Saturday to bang out 5 miles is actually fun for me.
I've become a different person, and for the most part (hey, we all have our less than admirable moments) I'm happy with who I am and how I am.
I've never pulled any punches with people, but the last five years have really defined my personality and raised my confidence level to a point where I now know that when I'm 80 and in a rocking chair, I won't be looking back and thinking "I should have" or "I could have" .
I'll check out Caroline's web site...if there's ANYTHING I can do to help out, please don't hesitate to ask, even if you're just looking to bounce ideas for fundraisers etc. I'm always trying to think outside the box for Leukemia, and would be happy to relate my successes and challenges there.
The department is voting on me on Tuesday; I don't think I'm going to have any issues there, but it's still a bit nerve-wracking. I just want to get started with the training and get GOING already.
Have a great week-
Mary Ellen
PS....I just went to the www.carolineenfriends.com website---I realize that their are thousands of families out there who are facing the same challenges and day-to-day stuff as your family is, but how can anyone look at those photos of Caroline and her sisters and wonder if there is a God.
I could write a children's story about the little bacon strip who wanted to be a firefighter. We'll call him Litlle Sizzlelean. (he was too skinny to be breakfast).
Ok, never mind, this has just degenerated into the odd.
;)
Have a great day- be safe.
I have to wait for "the letter" confirming my acceptance into the department before I can go get my physical....then I have to wait til the next business meeting to get sworn in. I'm so excited I can't stand it!!!
I find your bacon fixation amusing....;)
Battalion Chief or not....you're an odd duck Mick Mars ---but none of us hold that against you.
:)
The postal workers have already lodged a stalking complaint against me while I wait for "the letter" ...which will remain in quotation marks in my head until I actually get the damned thing.
Just dropping by to say Hi and let my friends know that as of today, I have been promoted to the rank of Captain. Brothers and Sisters Stay safe........
Make the Firefighter Safety Pledge. Show you support moving forward in the fire service to prevent more injuries and deaths from needlessly happening.

I lived for a year with my fiance in Chester County PA in North Coventry Township and ran with Norco (station 64) Always had great action on Route 422 and Route 100. Her mom still lives in Pottstown. We spend a fair amount of time in Berks/Chester/Montgomery area when we get time and money to go visit her relatives. Great area for sure
I did the same thing actually...commented until she squeezed my hand so hard i watchedthe knuckles get white. So I did the same and just watched in silence.
Have a great weekend!
Love the new design on the helmet. Gold always looks great on a white lid. It's too bad they only put the 2 Bugles instead of the 3. Reguardless its a great look. Glad to see your feeling better and the family is also.
Mick,
It has been a few years since I have seen you down at HHI but I know you run into my grandparents (Bob and Fran Homonay, your old neighbors at Hilton Head Beach Club) every once in a while. I still have the set of turnout gear you gave me years ago. It doesnt fit anymore. It is my collectors item. Hope all is well. Stay safe.
Mick,
Love your final quote on your latest blog. I wanted you to know I pirated the last line for my top page heading but I did add your name for the quote. You are a great writer Mick and I check the blogs daily for new content from you. Thanks for being who you are, and keep up the great work.
Mike
G'day Mick. Have you found out the name of the CFA guy you mentioned? It would be funny if I knew him! I've just started going through your posts - I haven't been coming onto the Nation all that regularly - and find that I have a lot of reading to do! Have to go now, but I'll be back.
Tony.
Steve Warro eh? I don't know him personally, but know off him, and only ever heard high praise of him too! He's no longer an Ops Manager, he's been promoted to the position of Deputy Chief Officer, in charge of State Operations - a very nice move for him! DCO is a very high position here, in a State-wide fire service!
Thanks, I have been down to your next of the woods couple times in the last 8 years. My girlfriends uncle's live in Hilton Head, Will was with the F.D for years and Joe, I think was in another F.D along the shore there, but know is a captain of a boat. The last time I was down I got to do a ride along with Will, at the Ice House station, we had 2 medical calls in 12 hours, but had a great time with everybody. I have couple of friends that run with 62 aka The Nut House.
LOL.....had to comment, "Never eat more than your mask can hold" to funny. Glad to see that's your helment and you didn't just take a picture of someone elses! lol Gotta run, literally....Annette
