Woman jumps to safety as flames engulf house

A woman who had to jump to safety was severely injured as an intense fire engulfed her house at 6191 Ward Road in the Town of Boston on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The fire started shortly before 8 p. m. Colleen Wood, 33, who jumped out a second-floor window to escape, was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition, state police said. She suffered burns over 20 percent of her body and a broken leg, authorities said.

Firefighters from North Boston and nearby communities remained at the scene late Tuesday. The cause of the fire was being investigated.
