Why I Joined Fire/EMS
While living in the Virgin Islands, my family, friends and I faced many natural disasters and emergencies. There was virtually no government sponsored emergency services to speak of. The only help for those of us that lived and those that visit, were the volunteer services. I grew up being a part of those services, JrREACT, Civil Defense, St. Thomas Rescue Inc., VISAR, etc. Service to my community shaped what I am now.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
Feeling of Community Service
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Short-term memory. The short term memory of politicians and bean counters. Immediately post 911 the fire service was fully funded to perform the duties expected of them. As time has pasted and memories fade, the funding is getting harder to come by, yet the duties and responsibilities continue to mount. The initial training requirement to meet these mandates places a severe financial burden on most departments. If that were all necessary, it would be a hurdle that can be surmounted with some creativity. However the recurrent training required to maintain CEU's and to prevent those very perishable skills from getting dull, add a near unsurmountable burden.

It was a very long and complex situation, especially for a kid to deal with.

She's 18 now and recently moved to Oregon. Last contact I had with her was maybe three months ago... not sure exactly what she is up to now.
When I finally got Child Protective Services and the police involved, they didn't do anything really, and we drifted apart a bit after an incident when I refused to let her mom's child-molesting boyfriend drive me home when he was trashed and so her folks told her I was unstable and that she wasn't allowed to see me.
After I got CPS and the PD involved, the mother moved them to Germany, and then a few months later the boyfriend moved them to New Zealand.

So, that was my life lesson that you can't save everyone, and that sometimes shit happens.

I'm 17 now and I think she and her situation have got to be what have had the biggest influence upon my life. I think its possible that I'm still in emergency services now because I'm somehow trying to make up for that I wasn't able to help her.
  • Marie

thanks :) always good to hear a compliment
