I was sitting at a stop light, waiting for it to change to green, when the local fire department medic went by, lights flashing, sirens wailing....my heart went pitter patter, and I knew, "THAT'S what I'm supposed to be doing."
Why I Love Fire/EMS
Getting to look people in the eye with that genuine "I care about what happens to you" look.
So many volunteer departmets crying they can't get members, and here some are rejectting a potential applicant that put herself through school?? And has EMS training? Since Ohio does not want you, your welcome here in the Pittsburgh region. :)
aww shucks, gonna make me blush. Don't give up, keep sending those applications in. Somebody is gonna wise up and hire you! Dad was a cop, you're with the FD, public safety just runs in the veins of some families. Good luck to you.
In 1982 I wanted to volunteer at the local rescue squad and to make a long story short, I didn't have much luck either (I was already a career firefighter, but wanted to contribute my off-time). The happy ending is that in 1988 I did get on there, in 1989 I became the Chief of Operations, and in 1990, let's just say those other people were no longer on the job. My point is that if you are motivated, a few people won't get in your way and someday, you may even be smiling when you tell them to pack their crap. Don't get down- you will find a way if you want it bad enough. Good luck.
My wife, even after I told her I didn't really want her in the business, became a volunteer EMT and ended up at the rank of Lt. before she got tied up with work and all. But being on your husband's side, it's hard sometimes because you don't want your wife seeing some of the stuff that goes on out there. And to be quite honest, firefighters and EMS don't have a great track record of fidelity. In my 28 years on the job, I have seen more marriages break up because of the stress and the bonding and all of that. So just find your niche and good luck. You seem like you know what you want. if you want, you can "friend" me and keep me updated; I'd like to know how it turns out.
Just going down my friend list and visiting everyone to say hi and make sure everyone is doing swell. I can do this now with under 30, but things won't be quite so cozy later, I'm sure. So anyway, hi. Any luck on the search?
It is amazing to me that you have to work so hard to find a department with room enough on it's roster to take you. Here in western New York state most departments haven't found it necessary to maintain a waiting list for more than a decade. We are always looking for good volunteers.
