hi my name is christina and i was wondering what type of fire fighter stuff do i need to know to join a vol. fire dept where i live. im not a fire fighter yet just had a chance to see how it would feel to be a fire fighter and i think i want to join. please help me with this so i know what to do when i go up there to get an app/
Christina, the first place to go is the fire department it's self. Check with the fire chief or any member of the department and ask them how to go about it. Each department is different and has different requirements. If they have a training night, I suggest that you show up as a observior and by being there you can ask questions. And by being there it shows your interested. Good Luck!
I am a fire / rescue instructor from NC. I have recently joined this social network and hope to start some discussions on training and team work. HELLO TO ALL that visit here for now !
I was asked by the fire chief if I would take care the the training program for the Vol. Firefighters. I am looking for some new and exciting things to get all the firefighters involved in training any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Everyone, it seems things are slowing down a bit in the group here. Guess those who are trainers are getting busy with putting a program together for the new year. Finding out what areas are required to be covered off for 2009.
Wishing all a safe and happy holiday... And best of luck for training in the new year....
I have the 2008 NY PESH Fire Service/EMS resource CD which has some Powerpoint presentations, written form templates for OSHA and response resources. Alot of info. If anybody is interested send a email to loomis110@yahoo.com
Hello, everyone!...I have some art work that I have been working on....You can use them in your training power points...They are not the best but i think they will do....I can make about anything with illustrator..We are all suffering through these hardtimes, so I am trying to do what ever I can take care of my family...Thanks Bill
Hello to all brothers and sisters in the fire service.
My best friend and I where just promoted to training officers.
We are trying to get our training off and running on a good not but can't seem to get others to show up. This is the same problem the other training officers had. We feel it is so inportant to train but its so hard to stay positive, anyone got any ideas how to make this work in a positive matter and any good training ideas. We have to do training for 1 hour after meeting and 2 Saturday trainings for members to make one of them. Thank you in advance for your input.
hello everyone..
im working my way up from the bottom as a humble grunt on the front lines to an officer position....
i look forward to reading new ideas for training...
thanks..
John.
For those new training officers looking for idea, start by doing a needs assessment of the department. Look at past training history, types or calls the department makes, the training levels of the firefighters and also send out a simple survey to each firefighter asking some basic questions to get their opinion.
From there you can identify commonality in their responses, see trends, determine areas of weakness and strength and so on. You can make the survey anonymous if you so choose.
The biggest thing is don't over extend yourself early on and make sure you focus on quality not quantity. First impressions are everything and if you start out bad as the training officer then it will be hard to motivate the firefighters in the future.
Anyone out there have any roof (ventilation) training prop plans that they can share. Our department would like to build a prop we can reuse for shift training.
Joe
At my station we have a prop that is reusable if you would like i could draw it up for you and send you pics of what it looks like also just let me know
For new and veteran training officers,
There is a great book to help with ideas for training from IFSTA. It is called the sourcebook for fire company training evolutions, they just came put with a new edition. There is also a training evolutions book for volunteer fire depatments. It is called volunteer training drills from Pennwell Books. Both are great starters for training. If you join the ISfSI, you can download some great drill props that can be built for cheap. Hope this helps.
I have written a class on the use of LDH manifolds. I am trying to figure out how to send it via e-mail. If you want a copy, let me know. It includes a class outline and pp. Its roughly an hour and a half didactic and up to 8 hrs. practical.
All right, it finally downloaded! Below are my class for the LDH manifold class. Use them as you see fit and hope you approve. Any feedback would be appreciated. One is the pp and the other is the written outline.
Car fire prop: We have several salvage yards that will donate junk cars to us. We use them to practice extrication and then car fires. We also use them for just car fires. Call around and see if they will be willing to donate, deliver, and pick up- all for a good cause! Good luck!
I am trainimg instructor with the Longueuil fire dept in the province of Quebec, Canada. A carrer dept who deserves a pop of approx 400 000, we are 220 full time and and approx. 60 part time firefighters. We have eleven stations.
Hey guys whats up I have just been handed the training officer for our driver operators on my vol dept. Is there any good ideas on training or materials out there that would be really helpful. Thanks guys
Hi Matt,
A good start is with the VFIS Driver Operator course. Classroom with driving practical practical, it's free if your department uses VFIS insurance. I follow that with the IFSTA Apparatus pumping/ driver program. Both are great start for new drivers, but nothing beats practice and hands on training. Good luck.
