If you talk to your local lumber yard and tell them what you are doing. They may be able to get you some trusses that have set out to long and they cant sell. Then you can make a 4 foot U out of metal J-channel that you can slide new plywood in. Then you are not destroying your trusses and prop. When we have classes we tell the students to try to bring a 4x4 piece of plywood with them.

Hey everyone, I was given the duty to create a Driver Training Program specifically for emergentcy responders. I have a training package from VFIS and I am checking out the NFPA website. Does anyone have any other resouces? Thanks.

I have recently been voted into the training officer position of our small volunteer Fire Department. I would like to welcome help from anyone, Ideas, videos, plans, just anything to help me build a strong system with in my department. We haven't had any programs like this in the past and are a very small non profit department. Yet, just because of our size the point i want to get accross is that training and saftey is just as inportant as the NY Fire Department ( in a way anyhow) So any basic training help i can get will be greatly apperciated. Please e-mail me with whatever you have to help me. THANKS AND BE SAFE!

I have two questions: 1) Does anyone know who fabricates some good "hands on" training props for HazMat Technician training? and 2) Does anyone know if HazMat courses are certified under IFSAC and ProBoard, or just personnel?
  • Suresh Kumar

Hai all, its lovely to join this group. Lets all have a good time.

I've said in the past and can not rave about anything than this program for Training Officers.http://www.firesimulator.com/sneak_peak.htm this program is free and it's worth it's weight in gold. In the past we will take a training tour to all or any of our areas of concerns. If it's a gas station, hotel, apt. building as we we are doing out tour one of us will start taking pictures. From the time we are about to arrive to pictures of a 360 of the building. This program Simulator 6 allows you to import these pictures and add smoke flames and place as a story board so you can see from the inside of the fire truck to the point of arriving. Allowing everyone to do there size up and incident command training. As well you know what you want to do if you actually get a call at this location. The cost is having just a digital camera and either a lap top or computer. If you lucky to have a projector to show the class that's great. But even if a few of you sit around the laptop or desktop. It's a program that will save you lots of time and energy when trying to cover off important topics like Size-Up, Incident Command, Truck Placements, Crew Placements and any safety issues one may have at any location in your area that you may have. Take the time and download the program and trust me you will enjoy this program for a great training aid.

  • Ty M. Davison

I have been the training officer for our volunteer dept for 3 years. I keep getting told that I am doing a great job by our 4 leading officers. BUT, I am having between 25-40% participation out of our members on training night (only 2-3 hours, once a month). My training has been relating to fireground operations and car accidents for the most part, but to try and draw in more members I have tried to make training more fun by adding some compition. I was approached by our chief and told to cool it with the training that I have been providing and go more towards a classroom setting and provide food to bring more members in. I highly disagree with the chief!!! But, is he seeing something that I am not? Does anybody belive that sitting around in a classroom setting talking about how we "should" do things going to give me the feeling that anybody else on the dept is reliable enought to warn me before I get my butt in trouble in a structure fire or to pull my ass out if it all goes South? We are supposed to all be "Brothers" in the fire service but I feel that because of my love for the fire service, and desire to make myself and everyone I work with, better is doing nothing but driving a wedge between everybody. I need help!! Any suggestions????
  • Paula MacDonald

I have been training officer for over two years and our members enjoy coming when we have fun events. Auto extrication is the favorite and we get enough vehicles so everyone can play with a tool. We also have fun competitions doing hose rolls, advancing lines and scenarios. As long as you keep it interesting people will come. Classroom is great for maybe the first half hour to go over how things should be done and everyone has a good working knowledge of what they are doing, but when weather is permitting we have our members out practicing what we will be doing.
  • Mathew Conger

Ty Davison I have the same problem that I wanna make myself and the dept better but no one in the dept wants to be better it seems like they have the attitude of been there done that and dont need to train for it. Well in my opinion there wrong I have been doing fire for about 6 years ems for 5 years you are never going to have enough training and it is always a learning experiance. If you find out how to push your guys and get them going tell me how you have done it because im still trying.
  • Kendra Eastwood

Hey everyone. Just joined and hope to gain tons of useful info. I agree with your comments Mathew. I think you can never have enough training or education.
  • jerry craig

ty davison im not training officer but a few of theguys and girls get togther every thrus and train we just get together discuss what we want to learn or what we need to learn and work at it it seems to be workin so far but im with you i would love to see more of our guys show up
  • Paula MacDonald

We train 5 nights per month, regular monthly practice and every Monday night. We take two months off in the summer from Monday nights. We do Level 1 two Mondays, Officer Training on one and SCBA and Driver Training on one. Our turnouts have been very good. Members have their favourites. The most difficult part is coming up with fresh ideas on the same old thing but we have a competitive bunch which helps so we add a little competition at times. Even in winter we have a challenge of Firefighter Fit and give them exercises which benefit them, they all enjoy it. We even make them very aware by checking vitals before and after to make sure they are aware of how fast their pressure comes down after working.

If anyone is looking to try something new when it comes to training, give the Gas Monitor Simulator a try! You can try it for free by downloading the app from the app store and then emailing me for a free demo code. The Gas Monitor Simulator from LightsOn Safety Solutions is the first real-time tool that allows students to interpret gas readings accurately and realistically. Student responders see visual displays with real-time simulated hazardous gas readings and make tactical decisions based on those readings. Trainers are able to interact with students in the field, observe their reactions and observe that the students are interpreting readings accurately and effectively.
With this advanced yet simple solution, you can train anywhere you have access to a Wi-Fi network, using an iPhone, iPad or iPad touch.

Email or call me for a free code!

We are preparing to have a map training session this month and I am trying to come up with some ideas on different ways to present the information. Maps is a great "winter" training as it is very classroom oriented. What are some ideas of how to present map training? Thanks!

Realplayer files are usually .flv files. You can convert them in realplayer to a windows media file .wmv then you can use them in a Powerpoint presentation.

Looking for plans to build a hose dummy out of some old 3" hose. If anyone has any please let me know. Thanks.
  • Tom Williams

Afternoon James, The last time I did a "hose dummy" like that, I unrolled a couple sections and made it into a 6 ft "figure" and then used duct tape to hold things together. I used the tape at the top of the legs, waist, back of the arms, and at the neck. Hope this helps a little bit.
  • James Parmley

Thanks Tom I will give this a shot.
  • Bob Kolva

If you run bolts through the waist, head and knees it will last forever.

Looking for a video clip from about 20 years ago. It was part of the Safety video that the NFA put out. The scene I need is the one where the truck comes in contact with some power lines and the Captain is electrocuted. Very powerful and graphic video.

I am trying to drive home the point in my aerial class about overhead obstructions and wires. I found an old VHS copy but it is all faded out. Anyone?

  • Jesse Quinalty

  • Lou Sclafani

    Hi everyone!

I have started to make a series of videos about fire science in English.
I was hoping that you all would help me with feedback to them as I publish them one by one.

I hope that both our science gurus and the rest of us mortals would like to help.
The gurus I hope will be hard on the facts and how it is presented so that it is as accurate as possible. And all others I hope that you will tell me which parts that needs to be explained in different ways or elaborated further.
Feel free to test it on your mother, recruits, colleagues or your instructor!:-)

The videos will be used in a fire science e-learning course which will be available free on Firegear sometimes this fall.

Please leave all feedback on Firegear, because else the history and the documentation of the process are lost on different forums like here on Firefighter Nation! I would like to keep the process and the different future versions of the videos published so that the history of each video is saved for references.

Thank you all for your inputs!

  • Elmer Sorallo Acolentaba Jr.

Good day! My name is Elmer S. Acolentaba Jr., I'm the Aircraft Fire and Rescue Unit Chief of Caticlan Airport here in the Philippines. In my pursuit to improve our station trainings/lectures/courses, I would humbly like to request for any ARFF, Fire and Rescue training materials of any possible topic. It would be very much appreciated and i guarantee the security/privacy of your work in terms of copyrights and patents. Any material sent/forwarded shall be handled only by me and shall not be posted in the internet or published.

I am very much hoping that you would consider granting my humble request. A request is all i could do due to lack of financial capacity to procure training materials for our department. Due to passive support from the airport management for trainings, i myself strive to give the team some lectures and trainings. It would be great if we had better training materials as ours is already old.

Thank you and i am hoping for your response.

    Cordially,

    Elmer S. Acolentaba Jr.

I just joined because I like having other's resources when I am getting a class up.  I like hearing other's thoughts and methods.  I've incorporated some in my own methods.  My question is, how do I get to the power points and videos to view them?

  • rodney recore

Hi I have just joined your group and have recently been appointed training officer. There is a lot of talk of the OSHA 9 hour refresher. We have decided to separate ours into 9 segments. Does anyone have a layout on this already?
