OK, indoor if all else fails line everybody up for vitals and lung sounds on each other, glucometer if you do that sort of stuff, and everybods favorite, reveiwing naratives on paper work, CHART SAMPLE etc. If you want somthign a littel more livley. line up some tables side by side so they forma cave and put a live victim under the table. Senario is victim in a builng collapese, now you have your crew do a trauma assessment, and c-spine in a very small confined area.
Hi folks.
I am looking to get some ideas on putting together a pro-active training package on the upcoming challenges that firefighters will enevitably face when dealing with strcture fires in eco friendly building construction(ie. rain water collection tanks on roofs, concrete exterior walls, solar panels on roofs and so on). I realize these characteristics vary on the climate of the region so any suggestions based on the conditions found primarily in the north east U.S. and Canada would be even better. I think it's important to start looking for these trends now when they are more the exception than the rule because I think it's fair to say that this type of construction (if you can call it that) is something that we are going to encounter more and more as time passes.
Thanks.

P.S. Please dont send suggestions on structure fires in igloos... We aren't that far north.
I just joined this group and have been looking back at some of the dialogue. I have used partially burned structures in the past for some of our training. Look around your area for buildings sitting in a holding pattern for insurance claims. If you want good maze training take a look at North Washington fire website in Colorado. I just went through that maze, it may be small, however it was very good. A great experience for our rookies
HAVE YOUR NIEGHBORS DISTRICTS COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND USE THIER CHECKOFF FORM . CHECK OFF THIER RIG AS TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE PLACEMENT OF EQUIPTMENT AND NEW STORAGE IDEAS . THIS WILL BE BENEFICIAL ON A MULTI STATION AND ORA MULTI DEPT RESPONSE . ALSO LET THEM DO THE SAME WITH YOUR RIGS . WE ALL KNOW HOW TASKING IT CAN BE COMING OUT OF A JOB TO RETRIEVE A PIEC OF EQUIPMENT AND THE RIG IS MOVED OR ON A SHUTTLE RUN FOR THE SMALLER RURAL DEPTS . SO IT IS GOOD TO KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND YOUR SECOND DUE APPARATUS . THIS OF COURSE JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT !!!!!
Hi, I just joined this group. I am tasked with training and wanted to know if any of your departments have a white paper, sop, service order, etc. on "How to handle recruites / learners". I'm not looking for the human rights or sexual harassment stuff, more a guide for instructors. In my service you learn from the more experienced and of your own accord. The department has all the policies and procedures in place, however they are generic and applies to the entire city council. We have nothing that addresses dealing with the students during fire fighter training and it's unique problems.
an idea for everybody my chief and i just built a roof on ground level where we can have ventilation practice while two people are working on one side we can cange the plywood on the other side of the roof it will be a practicle training aid for newer members.
we also decided to do it where we could do a wall breach from end to end taking the pack off sliding it through ahead of you and getting through 16inch on center holes on each end of the roof
Fun SCBC practice - In the winter months we make up "hockey" teams from the firefighters. Summertime we make up basketball teams. Everyone is in full BA hooked to air. For the hockey games, we use an empty underground parking lot. Everyone has their gear, including BA, hockey stick (or basketball) in front of them, a whistle is blown, and you don your BA as fast as you can and get into the game. Obviously being fast is an advantage to your team. This exercise builds teamwork, and is fun. The first person out of air goes off, changes their bottle, then gets back on the court, or "rink". The object is to try to conserve your air as you are working hard. If we don't have much time, once you are out of air you are out. The last person with air still standing, their team wins. We use a local elementary school outdoor basketball court for the summer games. Hope this makes sense - try it, it's fun and it's at least different. If this doesn't make sense let me know and I will try and explain it better. Cheers!
Hey to all. Just wanted to share an idea that is used in my department to hopefully benifit yours. In the summer months, we take an engine and a crew to the school parking lot, its big and its open. The crew dons full PPE, Including SCBA, breathing air and when the parking break sets, they come off the rig and advance a handline. once it is stretched they stay on air and pack it back and do it again until the first person runs out of air. It builds great teamwork and enhances speed, endurance, and effectiveness throughout.
This Saturday we did a drill (Jen & Brit's Idea) We hid SCBAs and sent in a team with mask on and hood covering so we couldn't see-Did a search like normal-When we came to a SCBA one of the team would put it on blind-Mind u we have members that like to make things hard when training-Straps pulled up, tied in knots,-U know what i am saying-Then the rest of the search would be on air-I was perfect-U get search training and test your skills on the SCBA if u need to work with it when in a bad spot!
A great idea my chief has recently came up with is Night Training. I live in a rural area not well lit so we are going to have night training with only the fire by light no scene lights just for the challenge to get tools and anything else off the truck we have a burn building we have to do a primary search with our irons find our objective
Another training we did is our Ex Capt in full bunker gear and masked up a 2 man team grab a crosslay run about 30 yards straight stream our target run back open the door of the burn building dragging 1 3/4" charged line to an objective finding objective dragging it out following the hoseline. (Note the room is pitchblack and smoked.) crawling back in to the nozzle and uncharging the line and bringing the line back out
Be flexible enough to have something to keep everyone busy. Like: You guys work on patient handling (cause you aint never going to fight fire) you five can do preplanning (so the "Big One" does'nt come as a shock to us) and the rest of us will work on pump ops (because we are trying to get qualified on the engine). OR: Split up into groups of 3-4 people (especially rookies), pick a truck, all stand in front of a compartment and discuss what you believe is inside and how its all used, open the door to make sure you got it right and do some hands-on, move to next compartment. Worked for me.
A good ladder positioning drill we have at our dept is, we set up 3 cones on one of the corners of our elementary school, in a triangle form. You then hang another cone from your bucket or stick ext. then from the platform controls on your rig you try to place the cone on top of the cones on the building.

hey guys I am looking at putting a burn car together and Im doing a little research so I don't blow myself up. Has anyone built one and if so can you tell me what you did and maybe send me some pics?
ive been getting bored lately doin the same old training in our department such as 60 sec. drills and search and rescue. anyone with some ideas email me at clewis@live.ocasd.org thanks
Hey everyone, Im looking of more resources for an Emergency Vehicle Driver Traing course I am working on. I am using material from VFIS and the NFPA website. Thanks.
Hey everyone. I am from a small VFD and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for some hands on training? We do the same thing over and over again...it's getting old. Not that Truck knowledge isn't important....just thought I would bring something different to the table.
im a junior but heres a rlly good idea my VFC started just last week its called a window prop its a small structure that is constructed to practice a large arey of things like emergency window bail and other things like the denver drill ext there is almost endless things you can do with this great training device... if anyone is intrested there is a guy on youtube im not sure of his name at this moment but he shows you how to build and many ways to use it... i think if you just type in window prop you can find it but if you cant feel free to send me a message and i will get you the info you need. like say it is a great training device there is so many things you can do with it and most of this stuff every FF should know...
Just an idea for any department that likes to train with EMS crews my department has in the past had a mock Deer Hunting accident we used public hunting land and had two hunters injured in the woods and used 2 way radios to locate and treat patients. Its a good training for radio communications as well as using various equipment to retrieve a lost or hurt individual
Most recently my medical lt and I came up with the idea to use glad press-n-seal wrap over are scba masks when we practice search and rescue. We are working on making a templete to cut out a properly fitting piece or wrap.
Just looking thru the press and seel rap makes it look like you are in very heavy smoke well allowing you to see outlines of objects in rooms that you are in.
Does anyone have any good footage of Apparatus rollovers or accidents? We are working on our Safe Drivers Training Course and would like to show some clips that will hopefully hit home with our guys. We want to dismiss the thought that 'it can't happen to me". We have looked all over You Tube and found a few but if you have something let me know. Thanks and be safe.
I started three months ago making up 1 to 3 page training or safety bulletins and handing them out at our monthly meeting.First one was difference between Class A & B foams and uses.Last month was seatbelt use and this month is going to be on lightweight construction. We are a small volunteer dept. and any training I can get in I can.
Wheel and engine fire simulation that were put to the test at S.A. Emergency Care today. Fuel supply (Jet A1) were extended to both motor and wheel assembly giving a more realistic effect.

Below you will find a copy of the most current training calendar for the Center for Domestic Preparedness (April-September 2011)as well as a copy of our Resident Program List which coincides with the calendar.
Our training is completely funded at no cost to you or your organization for state, local and tribal responders and includes round trip flight arrangements into Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), transportation to and from the Center, meals and snacks during training period, lodging, training and training material. We do cover some fees associated with getting to the airport, airport parking, baggage fees and returning home. We will pay mileage for someone who chooses to drive their personal vehicle, .50 cents a mile not to exceed the price of an airline ticket from the same location.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We have brought the unit right inside the classroom!
In conjunction with the counsel of a broad range of emergency medical service instructors, administrators, and technicians in the field, in 1999 we designed and manufactured the first ambulance simulator. It was
our intent to build a simulator that would as close as possible recreate actual conditions in the field so students could observe and practice proper EMS techniques. The better trained the professional – the more lives that are saved.
Can be assembled in an EXISTING classroom.
Designed for the ENTIRE class to observe fellow students.
EVERY detail of the EMS experience has been included in this simulator.
The DESIGN represents an actual Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
The INSTRUCTOR can “coach” and evaluate students on ALL EMS protocols using this skills training tool.
There is MINIMAL maintenance expense to this simulator compared to an actual ambulance.
Your ENTIRE class can benefit from training in a climate controlled classroom.
A new stress management Training module is available (no charge, no login required) for responders and those in direct patient care at: usawellnesscafe.org
