A friend of mine is going into Fire Protection at Goodfellow AFB next
year after he completes basic training. We've pretty much researched
everything we could find online. The only thing we can't find is more
information about washing out/fail rates. We've heard the wash out rates
can be pretty high, especially for people without previous firefighting
experience (which he doesn't have) so we're trying to find out more.

Does anyone know anything about washing out/failing out of Fire Protection tech school?

How often are you tested? What happens if you fail a test -- are you
immediately out of the program? How many fails are allowed, if any? What
sections do people fail out of the most? Can you wash out any time or
are you pretty much safe after the first few weeks? In other words, if
you're doing okay the first few weeks, do you have a pretty good chance
of making it all the way through? Or conversely, if you're having
trouble with tests the first couple weeks, does that mean this job is
not for you and you will most likely fail? Any information would be
greatly appreciated!

Sorry for focusing on the negative, but it seems like nobody else wants to...

Hi MIMI

I might be able to help you. In the military all the programs are the same thought the U.S. There are some variations overseas. So if you would get a hold of one of the AFB's FD such as Luke AFB in Arizona, They may be able to stir you to the program commander for your answers.

The training is tough even for though of us who has had previous training.
ok i am currently in training and i think i can help. you are allowed 5 fails after that you are taken to the board for review, if you are AD and you fail out, odds are they will simply discharge you, harsh i know.... if you are NG or reserve, he will be reclassed. on average you get two tests a day both are 10 questions, the acedemics are not to terribly difficult but there is a physical demand involved. there is just alot of information.... as long as your friend is serious about the training and want to be here and wants to succeed.... he wil be just fine.
