Anyone out there got any suggestions for a first time firefighter atttempting to get a bike to ride. I am looking fo rsomething that will not kill me with payments and something that will not cost me my life.. I am looking fo rsomething that is a nice riding bike, something comfortable like a crusier or touring bike.
I do not know what you are looking for but if you are looking for a crusier I recommend one of three bikes. If you want a little bit larger bike that looks good with saddle bags and a windshield, the suzuki bulovard c-50 is a great bike. If yoiu are riding by yourself the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 custom is a sweet looking ride from the factory that only needs pipes. The last is the Honda shadow 750 which is what I started with when I bought my first cruiser.
Riding a motorcycle isn't without its risks. It is not the same as riding something with four wheels. You should be attracted by the feeling of the open road, the wind in your face and the comradarie of those who share your passion for two wheels.
The reason that I recommend the bigger bikes is for the weight, balance and the additional horsepower/torque. Many times the hp has gotten me out of trouble. You can accelerate faster, stop in a more controlled fashion, due to the dual disk brakes and a bigger bike can be "seen" better by the idiots who claim that they have trouble seeing motorcycles.
I ride a Harley Road King. It's the best bike that I have ever owned and I have had all of the other bike makes and models.
If you start out smaller, ride OUT OF TOWN. Fewer distractions and fewer vehicles. Avoid high traffic areas until you have gained experience and confidence.
I would also highly recommend that you take a motorcycle safety course.
I have been riding for 39 years and am accident free on the motorcycle. And the reason is very simple: I don't do stupid stuff when riding. I don't drink and ride. I avoid late night when the deer are running. I am constantly surveying to road when I ride. And I avoid distractions when I ride.
Good luck.

I started with a Suzuki c-50 boulevard. It was an awesome first bike. im a big guy and it was comfortable for me yet light enough that it manuevered really well. I even passed the driving test for my license with it. I bought it brand new for 6500 so it didnt break the bank either. the only reason i sold it was because i found a firefighter edition Harley that i just had to have, and well i didnt need 2 bikes.
The laced wheels and white walls on my Road King are a killer, but man, when they're done...
OOH LA LA!
An 883 Sporty is a fine starter bike. Harley will even finance it.
Check it out.

Hey guys, hows it going, I'll just jump right in with ,if you start small you're probably going to go larger, I was warned and I did not listen, Started with a 04 Honda VTX 1300, after about 6 mths I new I wanted what the heart desired but of course $ is a big factor, 3 years later a fellow fighter's wife wanted him to sell and the price was right, so a Birch white 2002 Harley RoadKing now sits in my garage, I've put about 2K into the bike, RoadKings are so freaking cool, I think about riding mine whenever I see a bike on the road....
