Wow, I did not expect that answer. Very true and I agree with it totally.
Besides the gray matter between your ears, thermal imaging and pbi kevlar turnouts.
Outstanding reply bro!
YEP I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU!
I wouldn't necessarily say our fire gear has gotten better, and before you say I am crazy hear me out. Before the turnout PPE became so good, you had indicators as to when it was time to leave. (flash hoods, and the such) Now with our fire gear being so good, we are in longer, and much much further inside closer to the action than ever, and I think this is also a major contributor as to why we are getting so many folks hurt or killed. The mind is definately a great answer, if only we could say ambition is a trait everyone had. Training is a huge element in the fire service, the more the merrier!! TIC's have limited fire growth, property damage, and also has reduced the number of rekindles dramatically, so The camera is one of the top pieces of equipment to me. My only other one is Fire apparatus and foam systems. Back in the day (god I hate saying that) foam wasn't used nearly as much as it is today. It seems that foam is used in just about every application from car fires, brush fires (wetting agent) all the way through dwelling/commercial/structure fires across America. With the new lines of apparatus out building these foam systems into the pump panel it is more likely to be used. CAFS is more readily available especially vital in the areas where water supply is an issue.
You know I have to disagree on the gear part my friend. Heart Attacks are the leading cause of death in firefighters today..so while I agree we are in longer and further, I also maintain that our gear gives us a much better chance if something does go wrong. CAFS has come a long long way from what it used to be and foam overall is definitely improving. But I'll amend the earlier statement of "brain" to say education. The quality, quantity and subject matter of courses available today has grown and better reflects the "profession"(regardless of career or volunteer) that firefighting is. By far the training available to all of us has greatly improved from the days of "in house" training, to the current state of training available to most departments nationwide through acredited academies. Stay safe.
That's an easy question.....OUR BRAINS......sounds like I am being a smartass....but I'm not...education and training have gotten to the point that its no longer "Put the wet stuff on the red stuff" People are becoming more safety conscious and thats a good thing. Paul PS....I would have to vote on the CAFFS systems....foam really can be a great tool and cuts down on water needs a ton.....
The TNT or Denver Tool

At first I thought it was a gimmick but we have accepted the tool .

It did'nt take long for the word to spread thru the City now every Company has one.
I LOVE my TNT tool!!! I havent found anything I cant do with that thing. And, whooo boy!!! can I tear some stuff up with it!!!
I see that it's already been said, but I'll say it again anyway. The best equipment is the modern firefighter's brain. Without it, nothing else works!
That's a good point considering they used to use leather hose fastened together with rivets!
