Hey guys, been a firefighter for eleven years and have seen my share of violent death, in the fire service and eight years active duty Army. But I think my tank ran over the other night. I won't go into all the details, but we had a victom of major 1050 where the guy died of blunt force trauma but burned so bad the first thing I saw when the fire was out was a eyeless skull and it just got worse from there. I am a captain and our chaplain is 15 years younger than me so I don't feel comfortable with him, do you guys have any suggestions or resources I can go to?
I am having a tough time with this one.

I have a site that is just for responders and have a couple "older" and wiser chaplains and a grief and trauma counselor that are available for free. The counsel is confidential and all our chaplains and counselors are CISM trained.

Visit Emergency and Disaster Responders
Do check it out. The site is by responders for responders...

I've been a Chaplain for almost 25 years.... anything we can do..

In Gods eyes we are all his children and brothers to one another. he might not know firefighting as well but hopefully he knows God on a personal level. the knowledge of the scripture is where he can help most. comfort comes from above and within your faith. also hopefully he knows you and about you and the best way to help.

WHEN IN DOUBT LOOK UP

may Gods grace be with you and yours. Dave
Go to your pastor where you attend church. He should be able to help out.
I agree.. if you have a pastor.. that is always a great place to start. I'M a pastor as well as a chaplain and have learned that many times responders may not have an active pastor in their lives or they realize from the symptoms that they want someone to start with that has CISM (disaster mental health counseling ) . I regularly send people to their pastors and they feel better about what they have seen or experienced.

Do check with your pastor.. but... if you need us .... we are also here.

Having been in Emergency Services, I would suggest visiting with the group of responders who were involved with the scene. A lot of time other responders are going through the same pain that you are experiencing. Talking out the situation will help all of the responders better cope with the call, however if you are still having effects, I suggest that you contact professional heip. Rest assured that noone will look down on you . I regularly go to a counsler and go through a debreifing and this has helped me not only stay in the profession that I love, but allows me to help other responders go through a tough situation and cope with the feelings. Feel free to contact me and I will try to help you in this matter
