My company elects its line officers (Chief, 1st Asst Chief, 2nd Asst Chief, Captain, 1st & 2nd Lieutenant), our elections are the 1st Week in April.  After 6 years I, am almost certain I am landing myself into the 1st Lieutenant spot.  Anyone have good advice, for a Lieutenant.  What role do your Lieutenants play on calls, on drills, in house? I enjoy and take my volunteer career seriously as if where my personal job, and want to be able to do everything a good Lieutenant should.
Thanks for any and all advice

Dave just reminded me of the book, "From Buddy to Boss - Effective Fire Service Leadership." Check it out...

From Buddy to Boss: Effective Fire Service Leadership

What is the job of a Lt. at your dept.?

I know a bit about construction in my area   MOST are older balloon frame houses,  I know a little about reading smoke, and watching for signs like flashing and collapse,   Like i said i know only the minimal what they teach during our Firefighter I course.
GLUED only,  sounds like the worst idea anyone thought of...  my opinion.... Cheap isnt always better.

Thank you Instructor I appreciate all the advice

Like i had said to Dan, I keep my eyes on new and upcoming classes, getting into them is not always easy and having to get other guys to sign up for a car pool seems to be even harder.  But even as "one of the boys" I have taken command on scenes of alarm acts, and easier calls.  Being a leader is prob one of the scary parts. For so long I have taken the back seat looking up being told, know at this point I'm familiar and know, but not sure if I know how to instruct, especially the new guys whom dont know the first thing....
Thank you for you Advice and anymore is always helpful

I'm going to the book store tomorrow!
Thank you

Lieutenant as the bylaws states
A Lieutenants responsibilities are to assist the captain in his/her duties.

After speaking with our current Lieutenants, they help organize drills, and make sure the trucks and equipment are kept in working order.

What is the job of the Lt.  On a fire or other working incident?  Per your dept.

Do you have senior guys on the back step, guys who may be pvts but have a shit load of time on and know the job?

What kind of crew can you expect to be on the rig with you on a fire? Is it a mix of experience levels or mostly probies?

Call ahead. You won't find it at your neighborhood bookstore.

Or go to Amazon.com.

Ordered!  Thank you~

And don't pretend to know things that you don't.
