Ice/Snow/Frost - how to deal with it

I was wondering if anyone had some good tips to deal with ice/snow/frost on my truck windows when I get a fire call.  I haven't had this problem yet this year, but is there a trick to avoid it?  Nothing worse than needing to get to the station fast and having to scrape your windows.

Simple, don't go to any calls whe it gets cold!  Okay, probably not acceptable.

 

I have done the wipers half way up with cardboard behid.  I have also done the blanket across the windshield.  But I just opened the door and shut the blanket in the door.

The windshield deicer works great as long as the wipers aren't frozen to the glass, but it doesn't do anything for the side windows.  I put a small space heater on the floor (with adequate clearance, of course - safety first!) and plug it in along with the block heater.  Be sure to get one with a thermostat.  I set mine to come on around 45 - 50; it doesn't have to run much in the small area of my pickup cab.  This keeps the glass clear, the truck ready to start, and even keeps my turnouts above freezing!

Not a problem as much now that I live in the great Southern state of Georgia, but having spent most of my life in New England and the Midatlantic states I am a big fan of the liquid Deice spray . A few squirts a 3 second scrap and you are off

I have a windshield cover for my windshield that I use in the winter.  Got it late last winter and it worked fine. Didn't put it on the other night since the news said just flurries possible.  I didn't check my weather links (I'm also a Vol. Storm Spotter) to verify the news and went to respond to a structure fire in the early morning hours and had to brush off just about an inch of snow off.  Now when they call for snow for sure or flurries, I will be using my cover.

Move to a warmer place - say, Hilton Head Island, SC.  It worked for me.  I rarely have to deal with snow and frost.  :-)

I live in southeast Ga and I had to scrape my window early sat morning.  I guess its time to start thinking about the Fl Keys

Cardboard, contractor trash liners, mats...they all work pretty well...newspaper and cardboard work great because they absorb the moisture and then freeze and stay in place until you peel them back to go on the call. Under the wipers is key...and the ice melt windshield fluid...is boss...!
