Got my first verbal warning yesturday. Stupid black boxes on the rigs. Our ambulance department is broke up into 3 groups. We have critical care, ALS, BLS. We have 12 rigs total. We always have 2 critical care units staffed which do nothing but transports from the local hospital to more specialized hospitals..IE trauma centers stuff like that. Then we have 4 ALS rigs, 2 are manned 24/7 and do 911 calls the rest are BLS and do all the basic stuff during the day.

To get back to my story. Our director installed the boxes on all the rigs. If you go faster than 80mph it sends a message to the director. Well last night I was taking a gun shot wound to head to the trauma center. It was a true critical transport, he was on a vent, sedated, all the fun stuff. I was on the interstate and was running lights so I got to 80mph which is only 10 over on the interstate. Well I got called into the office. I explained the call the director agreed it was a critical call and he still said he had to give me the warning. I am a EVOC instructor and have a clean driving history.

Sorry I just really needed to vent my frustrations.

Thanks Derek. You have to live with your decisions you make, whether right or wrong. If someone takes something useful from this thread and my mistake ends up saving their life and their patients life. Well its all worth it. I don't believe in just posting all my feel good stories. I've got tons of stories from through out the years. Good and bad. All of them were learning experiences for me.
You may be an EVOC instructor and have a clean driving record.. but what about the tens of thousands of freaking idiots who shouldn't have been issued a drivers license to begin with sharing the road with you.. or the teenagers yakking or texting on their cell phones.. of the guy reading the morning paper during his commute .. or the little old lady with her Pomeranian sitting on her lap.... etcetera, etcetera, etcetera...
Policy is policy. To be the devil's advocate, would those couple of miles over the speed limit really made a difference????
i got suspended for FOLLOWING a rule that was not on the books...it was fun watching the chief and chairman of the board abase themselves before me at a public meeting and spend 10 minutes explaining the anti retilliation policy i requested to be read then answering public questions about the entire episode.

if anyone wants to know what i got pinched for let me know. its sad and caused a death.
No the time gained wasn't much. At least I had the siren on. LOL By all means teach me a lesson, slap me upside the head. No one here has to worry about hurting my feelings. I am a big boy and I can take it. But only with one condition.

The juniors out there and fresh drivers. Learn from others mistakes. Don't get tunnel vision. Don't let the call run you, you run the call. I failed by letting the call run me. I seen the facial injuries from the gun shot. Got worked up and knew "he" needed a tramua surgeon fast. And having the surgeon come to your rig, to try and do surgery while the patient is upside down with the rig rolled in the ditch because some idiot cut you off, pulled out in front of you.
we have to all go home. stay safe!
