Arizona Firefighters Control Tire Fire with Layers of Dirt

MARICOPA, Ariz. — Crews are battling another tire fire at a rubber recycling company south of Phoenix.

Authorities say the fire broke out Monday night at the Arizona Rubber Recycling center in the town of Maricopa, which is 36 miles south of Phoenix.

They say a 50-foot by 50-foot stack of tires is on fire and sending thick, black smoke into the air.

There have been tire fires at the same location in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and authorities say the last one burned for almost a week.

No immediate word on how Monday's fire started.

Fire crews say a backhoe is being brought in to dump dirt on the flames.

Arizona Rubber Recycling takes used tires and recycles them to create rubberized coatings for roads.

Having been involved in several small tire fires (estimated 2000-10,000 tires) simply burying the pile is often the most effective way, both in terms of cost and enviromental management, of handling the incident.

The fact is pouring water on the incident for days generally does not solve the fire problem but does create tremendous runoff and water management issues that are more daunting than the fire itself.

It seems like they have selected the best tactics for the situation.
