Although I do not claim to be the greatest of all firefighters and yes I do make mistakes on the fireground and in other areas of the fire service, I do believe that if I can bring up a topic, discuss it, and learn from it, it will better me in my knowledge and performance on the job. Ok now down to business,

I was watching an old episode of Rescue Me and on the wall in this particular scene was some form of a or note that said "Train to Live", well ok what does this mean? I believe that train to live means train as if your life is depending on it at that particular time. An old music instructor once told me that if you practice your music sloppy you will perform sloppy, yes I do understand that training is meant to be an environment in where you are "allowed" to make mistakes and that many training evolutions are "sloppy". However if we do not strive for perfection we will not be able to perform the tasks that are assigned to us, whether it be as simple as pulling a ceiling or as complex as rigging up to perform a high angle rescue. The bottom line is our training may be the only thing to save our lives someday we have to have the skills and be efficient in these skills to save not only (heaven forbid) our comrades lives but also our own. So think about the phrase "Train to Live" and see what it means to you!!!!!!!

The old saying, "Practice Makes Perfect" is wrong.

The saying should go, "Perfect Practice Makes Perfect." If you do it wrong in practice, you will do it wrong when it counts.

In the Army the saying they use, "Train as you fight."

Now I'd interpret "train to live" as meaning that your (and other peoples) lives could depend on your training.
But that still brings you back to the attitude you take to training. If you train like it's real then when it is REAL you are conditioned to behave the right way.

After all, the only difference between an enthusiastic member of the public and a firefighter is training (lots of trainig).
I 2nd this, and will also like to add, that if you arn't striving to train the best that you can and make your training count then in the end, answer this; who are you REALLY hurting by not?
