Brother,

I have a Sam Houston that is currently black, I want to strip it down and paint it white as a birthday gift.

What is the best way to get the old paint off? I dont like sandpaper because I dont want to sand the scroll work out of the rear brim. I am scarred to use a stripper because I dont want the leather to get soft. Any ideas? Please help.

let me tell you be carefull on what you use! right now i am in the middle or refurbishing 3 sam houstons. 1 cracked brim, 2 white repaint to black. i used sand paper by hand, took forever! i use a 5 inch sand disc on a drill and that worked sweet! i also now use a dremel on the hard to get places. be very caredull around the scroll work on the brim you will sand it flat and wont show. ive even tried to use a orange stripper from home depot and that worked the best but dont leave on to long. ive also done both prime and no prime before paint. hope this helped
Do you want to sell one of the houstons you are taking from white to black?
I have repainted serval I have found that using a heat gun works well it will bubble the paint and you can pill the paint off just dont hold the heat in one place to long or around the stiches. Sand and steel wool takes a long time Hope this help

Say Safe out there PTB
sorry not for sale. i tend to collect leather helmets.
I sent my black Sam Houston helmet back to MSA/Cairns last spring to be repainted white. They removed all the hardware, stripped, and repainted the helmet. They used all new hardware except for the carved eagle front. The total cost was $58 plus shipping. They did a very nice job on the helmet. It did take almost 12 weeks to complete but were very good at keeping me informed as to the status of my helmet. You have to call and get a order number from them before you ship the helmet. Hope this helps.
