OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha fire officials say a mother and her eight children safely escaped their burning home, which authorities suspect was started by a space heater.

Omaha television station KETV says emergency crews were called to the house late Monday.

Investigators believe the fire started when one of the residents knocked over a space heater and it started a bed on fire. Officials say the home had a smoke detector, but the battery was dead.

The American Red Cross is helping the family with clothing and other items. The family will stay in a hotel until other living arrangements can be made.
