Not sure if this is the right place for this post....but I am feeling sooo stressed about my upcoming surgery and how it will affect my abilities to be an EMT.

5wks from now I will be undergoing a cartilage transplant in my left knee.  My ortho says I will be unable to walk on it for 6wks and will be facing months of physio and almost a full yr to recover and no gaurantee that it will work.  I was told that if I was older I would be facing a total knee replament.  But I am only 40, so a TKR is yrs away for me.

I am hoping maybe someone on this board can shed some light on this subject.  Maybe some of you have it or a similar procedure done.

Thanks Chief!
Thanks Nancy. This is the first in a couple days that I have been online. I find it difficult to be out of bed and sitting up. My knee can't tolerate it for it long.

I'm only day 3 into to recovery and am having a very difficult time of it.
Well, 2.5wks into recovery and I can honestly say, if I had this to do over again, I wouldn't. It has been absolute hell.

Had my first follow up appt with my surgeon yesterday and apparently my knee is worse then the MRI led us to believe. He ended up doing more to my knee then we had planned and found a new 2cm (size of a dime) condral defect on the medial femoral condyle.

I still have alot of swelling and pain to contend with. I would have thought that would have subsided some by now. But still taking morphine daily. He wants me to get physio started now...expecting that to be hell. He said to expect things to slowly improve and shoot for a target of about 3 months from now before I've regained ROM and notice improvement. No squatting or kneeling for 3 months either...so guess that puts me off work for quite awhile.

I know its only been 2.5wks, but I hoped things would be slowly getting better by now.
Thanks Ralph.
Laura

Sorry to hear your in so much discomfort, but hopefully things will start to progress in the right direction soon . It sounds like they had to do a lot of work on your knee! I was laid up for a month but it progressively got better. Just make sure you follow your doctors direction and do what the physiotherapist ask you to do it won’t be easy but in the long run it will be the best for you I don’t think my surgery to my knee was anywhere close to being as extensive as your surgery was but my knee is 100 % better and i have gone back to the gym without any problems Stay positive and take care
Thanks Alan...hearing there is in fact a positive outcome to all of this is encouraging. I have a long way to go and will do as the Dr recommends. Although I don't have any great expectations from Physio. I will start that next week and go 5 days a week and then down to 3.

I guess the fact that I am amazed at how even something as simple as a straight leg raise can cause soooo much pain and be so difficult. You learn real quick not to take a good knee and the ability to use it for granted...even such simple tasks as getting dressed are difficult and painful.

However, nothing lasts forever right and this too shall pass..
Thanks Chief....positive attitude and perseverance.
Did you know you can become addicted to the PT? I fought when they reduced me to 3 days a week and managed to keep 5 days for an extra month. This is a very slow process. My 1st knee sx the doc forgot to send me to PT until I asked 6 weeks later when I should start.

You will make it out the other side! If I can, anyone can. Take split dose of pain meds about an hour before PT and again just as you start the session. You will get more done and have less pain, except straight leg raises are a pain in the a$$!!!!!

let me know if I can help!

Life's too short to be left looking!
Good advice with the pain meds..will definitely try that. I agree the straight leg raises are a pain in the butt, necessary evil though. Very slow process is an understatement. Seems to be going at a snails pace.

Physio starts this week and then hubby is taking me away for the weekend...soooo looking forward to that. Enjoy a weekend away, some time in a hot tub and just forget about the knee for a couple days.
Hang in there, Laura, it will get better.
What a fantastic time Jeff and I had on our little weekend get away. Knee is finally starting to feel a little better, the pain level has gone way down. Well, at least on the non physio days...lol ROM kinda sucks as does quad strength..but that will improve. Back to the surgeon in 4 wks and hopefully will be able to start walking on it at that point.

OOOHHHHH YEAH...just thought I'd share my excitement with everyone ....as most of you know my hubby is a law enforcement officer...a detective with the special investigations unit, specializing in violent crimes. Anyway...he received a commendation for saving a womans life....very proud of him.

Well, thats my update today...lol hope everyone is having a great week and a safe week.
Laura, I've been off the grid for awhile, ironically for MRI's, bloodwork, and various treatments to make my Neurologist, Endocrinologist, Pain Management Doc, Gyno, and Orthopaedic surgeon all happy with my pre-op condition. Pfffft, pain in the butt! The whole seizure thing seems to induce the pucker factor in all of them. I don't care, I just want this round over with, the sooner the better. We're doing both knees and the left shoulder at once, and my surgeon thinks I've just lost my mind, doing all 3 at once. Eh, it'll be rotten at first, then it'll get better.

I'm sorry to hear that you seem to still be having lots of pain and discomfort since your surgery. Right now, you're probably wishing you hadn't done it, and it seems to take forever to get to a tolerable pain level, which in turn allows you to do more to strengthening and conditioning. Take heart, and just keep telling yourself it'll eventually get better. You're tough girl, you'll make it! By the way, there is NOTHING wrong with having WTH days, and allowing yourself to have a therapeutic tantrum! I'm pretty sure I'd have lost it if I didn't have a punching bag, because you can still beat the hell out of the bag without stressing your knees!

That is wonderful that you and the hubby took a few days off! It's so nice to not worry about dropping a tone, training, meetings, etc. It seemed to me that when I just tuned out on Fire Dept stuff, that I healed faster. Maybe it's all mental, IDK, but it worked for me!

Keep the faith, it does get better! You've got lots of people sending well wishes your way!
