MILWAUKEE - Firefighters have rescued six people trapped on the second floor of a burning house in Milwaukee.

Battalion Chief Spencer Vassel tells the Journal Sentinel one child and five adults were rescued from the home as well as a dog and a cat.

The house had no working smoke detectors. The cause is under investigation, but Vassel says the fire apparently started in one of the first-floor bedrooms, then spread.

The fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and was contained about an hour later.

One occupant was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Three people were evacuated from the house next door.
