Indiana Captain Killed In Fire Apparatus Maintenance Accident

NASHVILLE, Ind. - An Indiana fire captain has been killed while making repairs to a fire truck.

Fifty-three-year-old Leonard Murray died Friday. He was a member of the fire department in Brown County's Jackson Township. It's near Nashville and about 40 miles south of Indianapolis.

WTHR-TV says Murray was crushed to death when someone else accidentally started the truck as Murray worked on it inside the department's garage. An investigation is under way.

Murray was an Army Reserve officer who joined the fire department after his military career.

Funeral arrangements haven't yet been announced.

My condolences to his family and his Department.
My heart goes out to his family.
My condolences to the affected families.
Since this is a news thread, I would like to offer a couple of points, based on the limited information that is available.
Based on what I have read, this incident was totally avoidable.
If Murray was working on the truck, then the keys should have been out of the ignition and in his pocket.
If turning the engine was required while Murray was under that hood, then everything should have been verified-vehicle in neutral, emergency brakes set and wheel chocks in place.
If he needed to check something in the engine compartment while the engine was turned by someone else, then he should have been off to the side.
This accident did not have to happen.
Sadly, it did.
My heartfelt sypathy to the family, dept & community. As Art said it is sad and like most accidents probably could have been avoided. This is just another reminder for all of us be diligent in all we do and think safety first.
