Juniors Being Pulled From School to Go on Calls
Hey, well i have to write a an editorial on an important topic. SInce i am a member of the Bagdad fire protection district junior program i chose the topic of juniors being pulled from school to go on calls. However i cant find really reliable information on the actual dept.'s that pull students from school so i need your help. I need:
statistics for how mant departments pull juniors from class
Regulations for what kind of call and if the time of the day makes a difference as to if they are pulled out of class
age limits on being pulled from class
if a drivers license is required to leave class
if missed work can be made up
excused absence?
if red/blue lights are given for personal vehicle use from school to a fire scene
what types of call they can respond to during school hours
and anything else you think might be relevant to my topic

our department does not allow juniors to leave school to go on calls, our juniors are allowed after school, and allowed to run calls til midnight, after that time they are not allowed on calls unless its a hoilday or the weekend, we just started to give some junior members pagers, but they were told they need to stay at home or in the car during school hours. Our juniors never used to have pagers, but the oldest juniors are starting to get pagers. Our department always stress that school is more important then the firehouse. Also our juniors must hand in a copy of report cards to the asst. chief, if they have failing grades they are not allowed at the station at all, unless the older members are there to help them with school work. We are a close department and try to support them in every way possible.

Here in Nova Scotia, it depends on both the deparment and the school. At the school I went to, all we had to do was sign a release wavier so as soon as we left school property, we were not their responsibility. And drivers liscence was only necessary if we had our own vehicle. Red/Blue lights are not legal in Nova Scotia so those were not a problem, but seeing as after we left the school, we were no longer their responsibility, we would probably be allowed to run them. Also, call type was not a factor, it could be anything. Missing class for a call was an excuseable abcense, and missed work was our own responsibility and did not reflect on the department any. The age limit for being pulled from class was 16, the age you need to be to join a volunteer department here. There technically are no "juniours". As long as we are 16 and are properly trained, we are considered a full firefighter and can do whatever the IC put us up for.

my dept lets me and the other jrs. leave school for fire calls and crashes because our dept is small and most of the firefighters work so they cant get off to go on calls and we have 2 have permission from our principal if its alright to leave and mainly she is ok with us leaving as long as we get our work done in class and we get our work that we will miss if we get called out on a call

Juniors are NOT supposed to be firefighting, so why would a department pull them from school for a call?

Tis, yet another thread where folks DO NOT read replies already made. Considering the number of posts against such idiotic, moronic, policy of letting juniors respond, and despite the fact there is nothing that a junior is going to do, nor should do on a fire ground which would deem they need to leave school......I instead just shake my head in disgust when I see such repeat replies.

I can't agree with you more on your previous comments, John.
And thank goodness I hit the backspace button and deleted my comment I was about to post. Long story short, juniors don't belong on the truck in the first place, can't do anything and shouldn't, and only mess things up by driving like idiots, pretending to be real firefighters, and taking cell phone pics of everything they see so they can post it on their stupid facebook saying how they're a real firefighter and they fought a fire.
I sure am glad I'm a 240 Ohio Firefighter now and no longer an explorer. All I have to say.

As a Junior Firefighter I take extreme offense to this. We only mess things up? We pretend to be real firefighters? I know on our department, with out some of the juniors we would not be able to operate. Each junior is qualified to operate the pump on every truck. Every one of our junior firefighters are certified or are currently going through Basic Firefighter. So please think this over. Each department is different. I do not know what kind of department you are on, but ours is a small rural VOLUNTEER department. We are extremely short handed on calls, especially during the day.
