the scarey part is you sound like you know too much about this....if I catch someone doing it they are going to buy the Department a new helmet.....and they will NOT get a replacement if t is determined to be not safe or serviceable....

In our Department we have a large commercial washer that is made for cleaning the gear...it is understood that after every fire you gear is washed, dried (air dry) and put back into service as soon as possible....and we have a "special" bucket and solution to wash our SCBA masks too....

in my time I never sent my gear out to be cleaned and was alwasy more concerned with Haz-mat or bloodborns then soot stuff.. that being what it is the couple times my gear Really needed cleaning i just filled a bucket with detergent and H20 and used a car wash brush hang dry and badda bing

Thank you Tony I am late on this discussion, I agree 200% with you. Your PPC is you outside and inside if you are not proud to wear clean PPC you will have no proud in your approach to your major purpose and that is to protect end serve. It is like grey hair you get it because you work for it experience can't be bought at the supermarket.

You mention Hazmat or bloodborne....Do you have any idea of what is in that "soot".....? Hey people keep it clean...it will be safer, will last longer...and yes, it will look better...

the only char on mine is from structure fires and it there cause it would clean off same goes for my tets they burned and melted from the job. You comprimise your helmet when us abuse it

The only thing I know about this is that 1) burning roofing material will give off smoke like a burning roof, 2) hickory is an excellent wood for smoking pork for BBQ, and 3) there are a lot of burning pine trees in CA. I hate to have to explain a joke, but sometimes its necessary.

I read the link article because I wrote the link article.
There's this thing called sarcasm, and sometimes it's necessary to be a little sarcastic when you're trying to illustrate a point. On occasion it can evolve into satire. But that's a subject for a different post. By the way, check out my shiny white helmet. It's not THAT shiny these days, but it's not MUCH less so.

I happened to look back at some of my old posts and saw this. Reminded me of the opposite issue last night. My chief's buggy is a 2004 Suburban with 130K miles on it. She is winding down her last days as Battalion 1 and her replacement is in the shop, getting the last of the electronics installed.
The past few shifts, however, I have smelled a distinct electrical odor inside the rig and everyone thinks I'm imagining it (to get into the new rig sooner). While I think that's a good tactic, I'm waiting for this vehicle to burst into flame.
Last night was the straw that broke the camel's back. I was finishing up with one of our companies at a brush fire and got back in. There is no smell like that smell and even the CO for the engine agreed, but we couldn't find the source. So last night when I parked the buggy in our sprinklered bay and plugged it in, I started to walk away and thought about it. Then returned to the car and took out my bunkers (especially my leather) and put them on the rack. I figured if the car did burst into flame that I'd just as soon save my gear, especially my lid.
It still smelled like it on the grinder we ran early this morning, but even sitting on the scene with the emergency lights on, it didn't do anything strange, so I guess I may be crazy.
