Off-Duty Nebraska Firefighter Holds Fire With Garden Hose
LINCOLN, Neb. - An off-duty Lincoln firefighter was called back to work by smoke down the street from his home.
Lamar Reil told the Lincoln Journal Star that he was doing yardwork Wednesday evening when he noticed the smoke.
Reil hopped into his truck and drove to a nearby duplex, where flames could be seen on the back porch and siding.
He used a garden hose to keep the blaze in check until on-duty firefighters showed up to finish the job.
Battalion Chief Dean Staberg says Reil's action kept the building from being destroyed.
Staberg says no one was inside the home during the fire, other than a dog and guinea pigs. They were unharmed.
Investigators are still trying to determine the fire's cause. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
