Is it just me
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the high level of incompetence shown, (especially where the young guys are concerned), in the arena of grammer? Dare I say spelling, but I am a lousy speller as well. Sister Virginia would kick my ass if she thought I was killing the English language the way these people do. As would most of the other teachers I've had, not to mention my mother! How does a person make it through life without the ability to communicate? I fear we as a society will be overrun by a culture of profesional communicators that can only say correctly, "Would you like to supersize that sir'? Am I just an idiot for noticing this or should I be happy that my son will grow up with the ability to speak and write? Or is that speek and rite?

The answer I have is English 089 and English 091 at your local community college. I've reccomended several of my subordinates over the years take remedial English classes; to go back and learn what they did not in high school. Usually they go on to take English 101 (College-level English, Woo-hoo!) right after they finish the remedial classes.
They can communicate more clearly, and it helps them do better in their career. No matter what job field you're in, solid English skills will help you.

It seems to me that it all boils down to slowing down, thinking things through and proofreading what you have written. Not all of us are as articulate as some (such as xchief22, Tiger or MEL) but most of us can put together clear sentences and express our point of view. As far as having perfect grammar and spelling, that probably will not happen on a social website. However, a few people are extremely derogative towards those who have lower literacy levels, calling them juvenile and condemning them for their use of the english language. I don't see the need for that, most of the people with lower literacy skills know it and either seek help with reports or place themselves in a position where they don't have to do reports or grants. As far as the younger generation, most will develope better syntax as they get older, by going on to higher education or by simply applying themselves. Most of their lacking comes from plain laziness.

A book that I have found a great aid is called Writers Inc.: A Guide to Writing, Thinking and Learning. Copyright 1992 by Write Source Educational Publishing House, Box 460, Burlington, WI 53105.
I am not sure if there are any current editions. I had to buy my copy in high school. This book covers everything from personal letters to term papers with research.

Well put, Chad and I will never attack or ridicule someone with lower literacy.
I like to go after the ones who are lazy; the ones who should know better.
I would like to think that, if we continue to use proper English, grammar and spelling, it will "catch on".
I dare to dream, but without our dreams, we are mere molecules with mouths.
