I am looking for ideas, suggestions, input regarding what types of events might be simple to arrange for a friendly fire department competition.  I have heard of other departments doing these in the past but none in the area where we are.  We are wanting to organize it as a fundraiser for MDA where teams form pay a registration fee to compete in order to try to get the other area volunteer fire departments involved.

Anything that we set up would have to be able to be done with little out of pocked cost using things that the department would most likely already have.  If anyone has had any experience with this, I would appreciate your input.

We use our old foam buckets filled with water and a couple doughnut rolls of 2-1/2" or 3" hose for a timed relay in bunker boots, pants, helmets and gloves, we call it the Best of the Best for just a little friendly competition...My guys enjoy it, and we get some great photos with facial expressions.
Hi Kendra,

When thinking about ideas for your FF competition, consider first the type(s) of calls you run commonly, having folks compete doing very mundane things, but completing all the steps where speed is not as important as accuracy and teamwork is both fun and challenging. What you don't want in your competition are evolutions that could promote an injury. It's also fun to put a little punch into water ever you choose by including some sort of mental challenge as well.

A good example of this that I learned when going through fire department master instructor training was to get portable radios and some legos. Arrange the legos into an object that once assembled will be kept that way. Folks on one radio describe what it looks like and the other do their best to recreated what has been described. A runner then takes the assembled legos to a referee to see if they (the team and you can have several) if the legos were accurately put together. This forces folks to use the radio to describe and improve communications skills.

Of course there are always things like water relays, hose evolutions, or an obstacle course where several different skill sets are used. Your only limits are your imagination.

Best of luck and hope these comments help make your training program a hit!

Here is an idea The firefighter Challenge...its almost like the worlds strongest man but with a firefighter twist you have different relays like you take a manquine in full turnout gear and have to drag it so far then you have 1 where you have to be full gear and carry so many dougnut rolls from one side to the other then you do somethong like ladder carry and churchmens ladder it is a lot of fun and educational and is you have an amb you can have streacher races

Try a bucket brigade. Use 2 - 55 gallon barrels, 8 - 5 gallon buckets, 2 rows of 5 firefighters and a portable dump tank. Fill buckets from dump tank, pass them down the line to the barrels, dump water and pass empty buckets back to the dump tank (no throwing). Object is to get as much water in barrels in a set amount of time. Makes for some good fun competition.
If you are a member of a department where the volunteers and career guys butt heads a nice competition of vollys vs career guys is always a good idea! have certain stations set up and have career guys go head to head with the volunteers! that will probably never happen but its always wishful thinking :)
