MUNCIE, Ind. - A fundraiser is under way in Muncie to help the two firefighters who survived a well accident in Delaware County.

The Applebee's in town is donating 15% of a customer's purchase to the families of Brian Buck and Rick Compton.

Both were injured trying to save two others overcome by toxic fumes in a well last month in Selma .

The event runs through 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Buck who's a volunteer firefighter spoke with 24-Hour News 8 about putting his life on the line to help others.

“I do it to help the community, that's my way to put back to the community and I love to help people and as far as helping people in a situation like that, I would do it again, especially if I would see one of my brother firemen in trouble like that again,” said Buck.

Although both men are out of the hospital they are still recovering from their injuries.

Buck has yet to return to his full time job. He still suffers from respiratory problems and dizziness.

I think this is a wonderful thing Applebee's is doing and very grateful these two firefighters survived.

There is one thing from this story which causes concern. The statement made by FF Buck that he would, "do it again". All well and good, but please, should something similar happen again, follow proper protocol and wear PPE! As all of us know, never repeat a mistake - especially one you survived to talk about!
I have to agree the support is great and while I understand the sentiment he expressed did he not learn anything from his close call. The funds could easily be to support his family because of his death. This man needs to be trained how to respond.
