The U.S. Fire Administration has announced the official line of duty death of Assistant Fire Chief Garrett Loomis, 26, of the Sackets Harbor Fire Department on April 11, 2010.
Assistant Fire Chief Loomis was among members of his fire department that had arrived on-scene of a reported silo fire. Loomis had climbed the silo to investigate the situation and was returning back down the ladder when the silo exploded. Assistant Fire Chief Loomis died from injuries sustained in the explosion. The incident remains under investigation.
To date, 24 firefighter fatalities have been reported to USFA in 2010; 23 from incidents that occurred in 2010 and 1 from a previous year incident. With deepest condolences the Sackets Harbor Fire Company Inc., Sackets Harbor, NY announces the falling of Asst. Chief Garrett W. Loomis, age 26.
On April 11, 2010 at approximately 9:15 am, the Sackets Harbor Fire Company was dispatched to a silo fire at the Robbins Farm on County Route 75. This was the same location of a fire on April 8th which destroyed the barn and one hundred head of cattle.
During operations at the scene, Asst. Chief Loomis was on the burning silo when the silo exploded causing Mr. Loomis to suffer severe injuries. Mr. Loomis was transported to Samaritan Medical Center by Town of Watertown Ambulance where he was later pronounced dead. No other members were injured during the event.
Garrett W. Loomis was a 2001 graduate of Sackets Harbor Central School and a well know resident of the Sackets Harbor community. Mr. Loomis was elected Assistant Chief of the Sackets Harbor Fire Company on Tuesday April 6th. Mr. Loomis was also a career fire fighter with the Fort Drum Fire Department.
Assistant Chief Loomis is survived by his parents Gary and Amy Loomis of Sackets Harbor and two brothers.
There will be a Memorial Service at 1:00pm Thursday April 15, 2010 at Sackets Harbor Central School. There are no calling hours.
There will be no procession of fire apparatus. Information and directions for firefighters and visitors from out of town wishing to attend can be found on the website of Jefferson County (http://co.jefferson.ny.us/) Fire Departments are requested to not bring fire apparatus to the Memorial Service.
