KETCHIKAN, Alaska - A sprinkler system extinguished a fire that threatened a Ketchikan preschool.

Police and firefighters shortly before noon Monday responded to a call from Holy Name Catholic School and found that a fire had started in a bathroom.

Fire Chief Jim Hill says a candle lit a soap dispenser but the school's sprinkler system extinguished it.

Students and teachers evacuated safely.

Smoke and fire damage was limited to the bathroom but water damaged a classroom, a hallway and the school's gymnasium. Damage to the three-story, $2 million building was estimated at $10,000.

Great, an excellent example of how a automatic sprinkler system is designed to work. A fire in a preschool could have been tragic. $10,000.00 in damage is a small price to pay.
