STANTON, Del. - Firefighters say a hydrant buried in snow hindered their efforts to battle a blaze that destroyed a Stanton mobile home, displacing five people.

The blaze broke out around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Murray Manor Trailer Park.

When firefighters arrived, Mill Creek Fire Company spokesman Jon Stewart says they found heavy fire showing from the roof. He says the two adults and three children inside were able to escape. He says the two adults had minor injuries, but refused treatment.

Stewart says firefighters had to use tankers for water because the fire hydrants in the area were buried in snow. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to control the blaze.

He urged residents to dig out their neighborhood hydrants to help the fire service.

The fire is still under investigation.

Coming from the state where during tornado season, the mobile home is the state bird, I can tell you that the only way to effectively save a mobile home from fire is to have the truck parked in front of the "manufactured home" and hooked to a water supply when the fire breaks out. And I'd bet my store-bought teeth that it didn't take this crew "45 minutes to control the blaze". Unless the trailer was stuffed with boxes of newspapers, it was gone in 15 minutes, 20, tops.

Which brings up another question. This report says they had to use "tankers", as in more than one. So if they had, say, a 1000 gallon engine, and a 1500 gallon tanker, that's 2500 gallons of water. How f*****g big was this mobile home?

They must build them a LOT different in Delaware...

We just went around in 2 man teams last week digging out hydrants for almost four hours. It is definitely a tough chore, and it would be nice if residents did it themselves.
We will send out a press release to remind people the importance of clearing hydrants. We will clear some if people call because they are unable to clear it themselves, but typically don't go around clearing hydrants. Like smoke alarms, CO monitors and so forth, we can't do everything for people and this includes clearing hydrants.
