GILLETTE, Wyo. - Attorneys for former fire cadets who say they were molested by a former Gillette fire chief have filed a notice that they intend to sue the Campbell County Fire Department.

The notice is a precursor to a lawsuit that is required before suing a governmental entity.

Joe Hallock is an attorney representing the fire department. He says the notice has been received.

He declined to give details because he says the case is sealed.

Former Campbell County fire chief Gary Scott in September pleaded no contest to 14 state charges of sex abuse and is awaiting sentencing.

The 55-year-old already is serving a 24-year federal sentence on 10 felony convictions of taking children across state lines for sexual abuse.

As the corrdinator of our Cadet program, just reading this news title is upsetting. I guess it shouldn't be a surprize since even the churches have dealt with this kind of situation, why should I think the fire service would be exempt.

My hope would be that people inside and out of the fire service see that the actions of few should not affect the efforts of many.

I can guess that some may think that doing away with Cadet programs would fix this problem, if so, I would ask how that logic applies to firefighters who get convicted of arson....should we do away with firefighters???

I wish the very best to those who were confronted with such a terrible act.
Yes Young Ones Ralph is right.I was abused as well(not my parents),if you have a problem, with anything, anything at all we are all here to help.Let's help prevent a giving yet another black eye to the fire service....In NYS we go through an Arson Background check every so often,I think its time we go through a Sex Offender check as well.
How can.....why don't.......I mean, come on......that ex chief should.......I mean, how in the world could......isn't there anything.......dammit, just give me one minute alone with him. I would like to say that I don't have the words, but unfortunately I do, BUT I cannot post them here, I will lose my membership.
I hope that all of the abused persons are able to recover fully from this tragic event. I hope they all know it wasn't their fault.
That is SO right. You just never know, and sometimes all the tests in the world will not help.
I agree with you Derek...I'd do the same thing as you would...
i had to in pa for hazmat team
how could you hide something like this? multiple cadets and apparently multiple incidents would tell me that someone in that firehouse had to know and just kept his mouth shut. These cadets are gonna be scarred for life and we may have lost a bunch of great firefighters because of this incident. This just sickens me that the parents put their trust in a man and he took that trust and abused their kids. I was sexually assaulted when i was 13 and i know that three years later im not over it yet and i prolly nevewr will be.... i hope this man who did this gets what he deserved in prison...
My thoughts on the whole thing is OH my freeking god!!!!!!!.....though i dont wish bad on anyone....but a bad dawg is a bad dawg...send him where all the other bad dawgs go and let him see how bad he really is..crimes against kids are soooooooooo not ok in my eyes, let him say it's how i was brought up or it's my up bringing.....then call me...i was molested to by friends of my family an when i see this my freking blood goes right threw the roof as the same as everyone else here....I also work for a battered womens shelter and i see how freeking ugly some people can be...god i'm so mad gerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Terrible for sure.
But I have to question the attorney's intent to sue the Fire Department.
I would think that the fire department would have a certain tort immunity, unless it could be proved that they knew of the abuse and didn't stop it.
I see no problem with a civil action against Scott. He's a scumbag and should lose everything that he owns.
Too bad for his wife and kid, but she will be divorcing him and moving out anyway.
Sick.
You just never know anymore.
I swear; alot of sick bastards out there for sure.
