THOMSON, Ga. - Authorities say an elderly man in east Georgia died in a fire while trying to heat his home with a hot plate.
McDuffie County Coroner Rhusha Mack identified the victim as 68-year-old Jessie Ramsey of Thomson. Firefighters called to the Tuesday morning blaze at Ramsey's concrete-block home found him dead in a chair in the living room with the hot plate at his feet.
Glenn Allen, spokesman for the Georgia State Insurance Commission, says Ramsey had no other source of heat. He said the fire has been ruled accidental.
Ramsey's daughter-in-law, Patricia Moss, said her husband's father was disabled and walked with a cane. She said he had lived in the home about a year.
