Judge Orders Rhode Island Firehouse to be Reopened
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A judge has ordered a North Providence fire station reopened just hours after the mayor ordered it closed.
Mayor Charles Lombardi said the Geneva Fire Station on Douglas Avenue is not needed for public safety and the city needs to shutter it to save money.
But firefighters' union President Lt. John Silva says the station is critical in maintaining quick response times to emergencies in the city, and firefighters were given no notice of the closure.
Silva says a judge Wednesday ordered the station to stay open until a hearing on the union's request for a permanent injunction. Lombardi agreed to reopen the station within 48 hours.
