PENDLETON, Ind. (WISH) - A house fire in Madison County spread to three other homes and has people who live in the neighborhood concerned. Investigators said the house burned in a matter of minutes.

Dozens of fire departments from several counties rushed to the Summerlake subdivision in Pendleton just before three o'clock Monday afternoon. Once on the scene, they found not one, but four homes on fire.

"It was just unbelievable how fast it took off," said Melvin Hatfield of Pendleton.

Chris Howe lives in the neighborhood off State Road 13. Howe saw the fire and took home video of the blaze.

"I came out my door and I smelled it and saw the smoke and drove over here and saw it," Howe said.

Shane Proctor was alerted to the fire burning his home.

"One of the neighbors came knocking on the door. I heard the door bell ringing about 60 times,” Proctor said.

Richard Lotts said he's now concerned for other homes because they're all so close together.

"It's very frightening. I mean these houses burned in a matter of 10 minutes. In less than five minutes, the fire was through the roof of the primary house," Lotts said.

Investigators said the wind did not help the situation.

"Firewalls are walls that's inside the attic space that would actually stop the fire from spreading to an attic space, all these houses meet that code. There's really not anything you can do exterior wise to help that situation out," said Fortville Fire Chief Roger Tappy.

The State Fire Marshal and the Madison County Sheriff's Department are investigating the fire. They don't know how the fire started.

Contributing factors; close proximity of homes, but this is nothing new, wind driven fire, and cheap modern construction methods.
