so im in highschool, and its probably bad that i can't relate to my age group, but tomorrow i have to present something. (every few days i have to) and ive chosen my topic to be fire prevention.
i dont know how to really engage 9-12th graders into it and im wondering if anyone has any ideas.
i go to a school of about 72 kids..9-12..so its very small. everyone knows everyone and it makes it easier for attentiveness and respect.
but maybe what material i should go over? whats considered too babyish or not?
i dont know!
any ideas are greatly appreciated!

To also add to what Kali suggests, take a look at your own activities and the activities of friends your age, besides cooking, candle fires seem to be another cause of fires affecting teens and young adults.
Along with some stuff, despite the "babyish" material, that still applies, but maybe even moreso in teens and young adults, especially Get out STAY out. At your age, there is a sense of invincibility and a mindset that I can just run in quick to get money, dog, cat, photos, phone, whatever. Smoke is the killer not the fire. Checking smoke detectors is also important.

The difference between the age groups is you are at a point where you can actually give the grim details, you can show the pics of a house gutted by fire, you can show the numbers of people killed and so forth. The prevention program aimed at kids is to make it fun and interesting for them to learn, as people age, the seem to forget what they learned as kids. You can present the same material, but with a serious side, the reality side of fire, don't sugarcoat the material, make it serious, not fun.
Honestly, I'd go over statistics. I think every age group can relate to numbers. Maybe show how many lives are saved due to fire sprinklers in residential households.
Exactly Kali. You hit the nail right on the head. Focus on the behaviors of your peers and yourself and go from there.
drugs and alcholo is posibly the bigest topic wiyh that age group
As has already been said, even topics that might seem babyish, are still relevant topics. I would add that in addition to drugs and alcohol that was mentioned, you could also include smoking while in bed/careless disposal of smoking materials. Stay safe!
Go to igot2kno.org which is a college student fire prevention site and check out their resource page it has a ton of links some with short videos you could show and then discuss to keep their attention. Also I think the To Hell and Back DVDs showing what happens to people who are burned are powerful. You can get get them free @ www.PeoplesBurnFoundation.org I would definitely contact you closest Fire Life Safety Educator too.
Whenever I am given the chance, I do my best to help college girls students learn about fire prevention....glad you found it of use, Kali.
great, thank you!
it did thank you! many more presentations (my school loved it so much they asked me to do one every week) to come!
yes! thank you this will be my next topic.
numbers really hit home for them, and i did it in a somewhat comedic way, that got the point across. it was great!
i did give them the cold hard facts but for one thing i did, i drew a picture of the 80% of people that die in house fires.
so i had 8 dead stik figures inside a house and 2 outside and though it was a comedic approach and everyone laughed, they got the point that house fires are what need to be prevented more than anything.
thanks though. as we approach prom ill do a big thing on drinking and driving.
