MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police say the second of two children found locked inside a house alone during a fire has died.

In a news release Monday, police identified the second child as 2-year-old Catareon Dunn, who had been hospitalized in critical condition after the fire Oct. 19.

His brother, 3-year-old Ladareon Dunn, was pronounced dead at Le Bonhuer Hospital the day of the fire.

Police say the boys' mother had left the children alone to run errands and did not learn of the fire until after the children had been taken to the hospital.

Police say the Shelby County District Attorney General's office has declined to file charges, but the case will be sent to the grand jury section for a final review.

"Declines to file charges" is as despicable of the act itself.
You DO NOT leave children who are not capable of caring for themselves ALONE while you "run errands" and lock them in the house.
It is criminal and charges should be brought.
Let's see: kids were home without parent or guardian at the time of the fire. House was locked so they couldn't get out.
That's all I need to know. I don't doubt that the mother is upset and she should be, but she should also be charged with crimes. Another reason to be upset, but you don't reward this kind of stupid with a free pass.
Never.

thats sick this mother should feel the full arm of the law those poor babys didnt deserve to die like that.... all alone locked inside a burning building, makes me sick i hope she feels this for the rest of her life
She won't if she gets a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.
The typical line of thinking is that "oh, she has suffered enough because she will pay for the rest of her life".
The key word is "life". She HAS one. Her poor kids DON'T.
And the law isn't designed to be measured against a moral decision or misjudgment. It is designed to distinguish between lawful and unlawful; law abiding or law breaking and a system of punitive recourse when the line is crossed.
She crossed the line when you left them, locked them in and then contributed to their deaths.
End of story. She goes to jail.
And the rest of us are left wondering what drives this kind of behavior in people with at least half a brain?
Sick, sick, sick.
