N5A is OSHA
N6A is NFPA
the N6A has an added impact dome inside the helmet to meet NFPA Req.
Check your state laws and department policies on FF PPE, to make sure you get the right one.
Your are correct.. Differnt regs and rules.. how ever if you order a Sam Houston with Bourks eye shields your helment wont have a NFPA sticker.. only if you order with a face shield.. you make it NFPA complaint by adding your goggles
the sam houston is nfpa complinate where as the new yorker is not. this is because of the amount of collapse space there is between the outter helmet and the inside impact dome.
I currently have a New Yorker, I am looking for a Sam Houston size large I would prefer red as we just went back to color helmets,,,,,We were all black except for Chief
Officers now its yellow for recruit black for ff/pm blue for lieut. and red for capt. any help would be great jim BCFD RESCUE 1

Need to add my 2 cents as some of the info is incorrect.
N5A does not have the added impact protection and liner designed to take a blow from above, with a break-a-way system as compared to the N6A. This is why the N6A sits higher on your head and also weighs more.
It is not the same impact protection thus it is also CHEAPER to purchase.
Furthermore, the NFPA sticker example given is incorrect, the 4" face shield is non-compliant period. The only compliant eye protection is Goggles or a 6" face shield. Bourkes alone are not, but bourkes with goggles are NFPA compliant.
